Jamie Carragher joked Roy Keane will be "delighted" with Manchester United's signing Sergio Reguilon after the deadline day move.

Reguilon, 26, has joined United from Tottenham on a season-long loan deal after Erik ten Hag's squad was hit by an injury crisis. Fellow left-backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are both nursing injuries, forcing Ten Hag to make a late move in the transfer market.

Reguilon says he's "ready to fight" to help United be successful, but not everyone is happy with the move. Some United fans are annoyed that Ten Hag has signed a player who was deemed surplus to requirements by Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.

Legendary United skipper Keane is unlikely to be pleased with the transfer either after criticising Reguilon in the past. Two years ago, Keane suggested the Spanish defender was "average" and questioned why Real Madrid let him join Spurs in 2020.

Carragher was quick to remind Keane of his comments during Sky Sports' deadline day coverage. As fellow pundit Gary Neville discussed United's deal for Reguilon, Carragher sarcastically said: "Roy Keane will be delighted". Neville laughed in response.

Keane slammed Tottenham's squad during a heated row with fellow Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp. The United icon said: "Tottenham have got so many average players... if you take (Harry) Kane and Son (Heung-Min) out of that team they are average."

Redknapp disagreed with Keane and described Reguilon, who was signed by former Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho, as a "fantastic left-back". Yet the Irishman simply replied: "Is that why Real Madrid let him go? Why did Real Madrid let him go?"

Reguilon will be determined to prove his critics wrong and get his career back on track after a difficult period. He hasn't played for Spain since 2021 and made just 11 LaLiga appearances to Atletico Madrid during an injury-hit loan spell last season.

"In life you have to be ready for everything and the chance to represent this great club with such an illustrious history is one that I could not turn down," said Reguilon after becoming a United player on deadline day.

"Having spoken to the manager, I know what he needs from me, and I am ready to play my part in helping the team to achieve success. I know that I can contribute to Man Utd this season; I am ready to fight for this group and show everyone my qualities."

United's football director John Murtough added: "Once it became clear that we needed to bring in another left-back we assessed a number of targets and acted quickly to sign Sergio. He possesses all the required qualities to help us achieve our aims this season.

"He has good experience in both the Premier League and in European competitions, so he is ready to come into the squad and perform straight away."
