Premier League deal sheets explained as clubs race to complete moves by deadline
The 2023 summer transfer window is nearly over and Premier League clubs are still scrambling around to get deals over the line.
Top-flight clubs in England have once again spent a record amount with an outlay of over £2bn this summer. Some have spent more than others (looking at you, Chelsea ) and with just a matter of hours of the window remaining, the deals don’t look like slowing down any time soon.
Clubs in the Premier League are attempting to get late deals over the line on deadline day, with some negotiations expected to go on late into the night. And we’ve seen plenty of deals go down right to the wire in the past.
Some talks have been more successful - Arsenal ’s big money signing of Mesut Ozil in 2013 one of the biggest deadline day deals of the past decade. Elsewhere, Leicester’s move for former Sporting Lisbon midfielder Adrien Silva goes down as one of the most infamous deadline day deals - the Foxes missing the deadline to register the Portuguese by 14 seconds.
Fortunately, there is a solution for clubs who are left scrambling at the deadline. The Premier League allow deal sheets to be submitted in order to extend the deadline by two hours.

When does the transfer window close?
The summer transfer window opened on June 14 and is set to run until September 1.
What time is the transfer deadline?
The window officially slams shut at 11pm on Friday evening, with English clubs having until then to get deals over the line.
Deal sheets also have to be submitted before that time for any clubs struggling with any late talks.
What is a deal sheet?
A deal sheet is a document that allows a club to extend their deadline to try and seal a transfer. However, there are a few intricacies that have to be met in order for the Premier League to allow them.
The sheets cannot be used before 9pm on deadline day and they must be fully completed before the deadline itself. Clubs must also demonstrate that an agreement has already been reached between the two clubs, but extra time is needed to complete any remaining documentation.
Once a deal sheet has been submitted, clubs have an additional two hours to get a transfer over the line. If a club are however attempting to seal an international transfer, the Premier League have confirmed that they still have to meet the FIFA Transfer Matching System deadline of midnight.
