Jurgen Klopp has told Liverpool’s owners they must fund a summer spending spree - whether or not there is Champions League cash to pay for it.

But the Reds boss has also told his club’s supporters they must “calm down” and stop screaming for his entire squad to be replaced, and understand the current team will form the base for a new era of success.

Klopp is usually reticent to discuss finances or put pressure on his American bosses, but following the midweek capitulation against Real Madrid, the German coach pulled no punches as he made clear he plans an Anfield rebuild.

“Money always has an impact (on signings). But it can not be that much of an impact (this time),” he explained. “Of course it is influential, but it is a summer where we have to be in the market, definitely.

“We know we have to change things and we will, we cannot do that now - we just have to go through this and fight back - but it is already clear we have to do something in the summer. Around us obviously a few (clubs) are speeding up, and you cannot ignore that.

“I cannot decide at all about money, not about one penny. That was always the same. My job is to make 100 per cent clear what we need from a sports point of view and then other people are responsible for giving us the resources.”

Klopp may surprise some fans with the bluntness of his message midseason, when Liverpool still have a chance of finishing in the top four to guarantee Champions League football for the seventh consecutive season under the Reds manager.

He knows action is required now to ensure they are in the hunt for the best players this summer, irrespective of their European hopes. Klopp added: “It is tricky and difficult and it will be a late decision, I guess.

“But we have to start work (on recruitment) earlier before we know where we will end up position-wise and European competition-wise. These things are clear here."

But as he prepared for what has now become a massive game at Crystal Palace on Saturday - with the chance to close the gap on Tottenham in fourth place to four points with a game in hand - he also had a strong statement for the fans.

Klopp said: “This team was always the basis for all what we do, and is the basis for all we do (in the future). Even if people are now in the mood like, ‘He can go, he should go, bam, bam bam - everybody out’. My God, calm down please!

“Have a look. Go on YouTube and watch an old video and think, ‘That’s what he did, he threw his heart and soul on the pitch’. That’s still in there so let’s make a decision after the season.”

For Klopp, the task now is clear: everyone, owners, staff, players and fans, on the same page to fight for a top four place - and then strengthen to challenge for honours again next season.

“As long as we are together, let’s support this group with all we have. That’s the only thing I am asking for,” he added. “We know what we will do, not exactly what we will do, it is still about finding the right players, not about bringing in a lot.

“And thank God in the world of football there are a lot of right players. Not all of them are affordable or want to come but there are a lot of really good players out there.

“But I’ve said it now - and I don’t want to talk every week about what happens in the summer - from now we can talk about the wonderful football we play, when we play it.”
