The hero cop who died after being hit by a train while saving a man is the uncle of Nottingham Forest footballer Joe Worrall, it has been reported.

The 26-year-old centre-back was controversially given a red card during his side's defeat against Manchester United around the same time Sargeant Graham Saville was in hospital. The 46-year-old cop was hit by a train while trying to save a man who was in distress. The incident happened in Balderton just before 7pm on August 24. The father of two was fighting for his life until he sadly passed away yesterday with his family at his bedside.

Worrall said to be "devastated" at the loss and Saville's father-in-law Terence Henshaw, whose daughter Joanne was married to him told The Mail: "It is so sad. There is a lot of love and support out there for him." Chief Constable Kate Meynell said he was a "hugely respected and popular colleague" and his death in the line of duty was an "enormous shock" to the force. The 29-year-old man he was assisting is believed to have non-life-threatening injuries.

Chief Constable Kate Meynell said: “Today is a day of mourning for the entire police family. Graham was a hugely respected and popular colleague and his death in the line of duty has come as an enormous shock to us all.

“On Thursday, he went to work to protect the people of Nottinghamshire from harm, and it is testament to his bravery and dedication as a police officer that he was fatally injured while attempting to save another man’s life. His service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

“I would also like to pay tribute to the officers who attended the scene, some of whom provided immediate medical assistance while the ambulance was on its way. This was a deeply traumatic incident for those officers and we have a dedicated team providing support to them.

“When a colleague dies in the line of duty the shockwaves and sadness reverberate throughout the policing family and we will all deeply mourn our colleague.”

It comes as a JustGiving page that has been set up to help Sergeant Saville's family has raised more than £95,000. Met Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said in a tribute today: "We are devastated to learn of the death of Sergeant Graham Saville. Before joining Nottinghamshire Police in 2017, Graham began his career in policing here with us in the Met. Losing an officer in the line of duty is something we all hope we never have to face."

He continued: "It is one of the darkest and most sobering moments which brings into focus the outstanding dedication and bravery officers show each day, so often out of the spotlight motivated only by an unflinching desire to do good and to support those in need." Prime Minister Rishi Sunak joined the tributes to Sergeant Saville's bravery and posted on X, previously known as Twitter: "I'm saddened to learn of the passing of Sergeant Saville. It is a testament to his bravery that he died in the line of duty and a terrible reminder of the work the police do every day to keep us safe."

The Mirror contacted Nottinghamshire Police for further comment.
