A pair of revellers were stabbed outside a nightclub just hours after welcoming in the New Year.

Police scrambled to Mojo club after a 24-year-old was stabbed in the chest and an 18-year-old was stabbed in the leg.

The New Year horror attack unfolded at around 4.15am on Sunday and left the two young men recovering in hospital in a traumatising start to 2023.

Partygoers were celebrating New Year at the club which promises "fantastic cocktails, great food and the best music in town."

Muhammad Usman, who works in the area, shared his concerns and said he had never seen a police presence like it.

"It is good to see so many officers in the area though. I feel safe knowing that they are doing their job.

"This is a lot of police. I’ve never seen a police scene like this before."

Detectives are appealing for information and cordons remained in place around the city centre on January 1.

Student Rosie Bostock, 22, said the incident is very worrying and "makes you scared to go out."

She added: "It is very sad. It is bad if it happens on any day of the year.

"But even more so during the festive period. Me and my friends always walk around here at night so it is really scary."

The knife attack took place in Thurland Street which remains closed along with four other roads affected by the incident.

Forensic officers were seen investigating the scene.

Nottinghamshire Police confirmed that this was a "serious assault which left two young men in hospital".

Det Supt Hayley Williams said: "This was a very serious assault that left two young men in hospital.

"We are working hard to understand what happened in the moments before, during and after this incident and are asking for any remaining witnesses to come forward.

"We would also like to speak to any taxi or bus drivers who may have may have noticed an injury to one of their passengers, or to anyone else who has noticed unexplained injures to someone they know or blood stains to their clothing.

"Several police cordons are in place across the city centre in relation to this incident.

"Whilst we appreciate these may cause disruption to local businesses, it is essential imperative that we gather all available evidence about what happened in the early hours of this morning."
