Kim Cattrall has hinted life advice from her late mother gave her the strength to accept an invitation to reprise her iconic Sex and the City role in sequel series And Just Like That... – despite her highly publicised feud with her co-stars.

The 67-year-old played Samantha Jones in all six seasons of Sex and the City and in the two sequel movies, playing the role from 1998 until 2010. However, there was a noticeable absence of the character when the show returned to screens as And Just Like That.. after years of reports of frosty relations between Kim and her co-stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon.

But following a call from the head of HBO, and a reported $1 million (£790,000) pay check, Kim made a triumphant return to the franchise as Samantha for one scene where she spoke to SJP’s Carrie Bradshaw over the phone.

The scene itself meant Kim didn’t have to film opposite her rival, and her scene was shot with her alone in the back of a car. Now Kim has hinted tough words form her mother, Shane, who passed away in December last year aged 93, gave her the strength to accept the role.

Kim told Vogue Greece: “For me, a woman in her 60s, I think that the biggest challenge is to keep being relevant, to keep working, to have something to say. My idol was always my mother.

“Even though she could never connect to a job that made her happy, and she was depressed and alone for long periods of time, she never lost her spirit. That’s something she passed on to me. I am thankful to her for teaching me to defend myself and not allow others to control my narrative. That is a very important lesson for young women.”

Kim and Sarah’s feud spectacularly erupted into the public spotlight in February 2018 when the Carrie Bradshaw actress publicly shared her condolences to Kim after her brother, Chris, died. Kim took aim at her former co-star to renounce her kind words as fake and blasted her for trying to draw attention to herself amid her grief.

She said at the time: “I don't need your love or support at this tragic time @SarahJessicaParker. My Mom asked me today 'when will that @SarahJessicaParker, that hypocrite, leave you alone?'

“Your continuous reaching out is a painful reminder of how cruel you really were then and now. Let me make this VERY clear. (If I haven't already) You are not my family. You are not my friend. So I'm writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy in order to restore your 'nice girl' persona.“
