Car park charges have increased by up to 70 per cent in one year - with top destinations charging up to £35 each day.

The price of parking at some of the UK's favourite seaside destinations has gone up by an average of 67 per cent since 2022, a survey shows today.

Newquay in Cornwall and Brighton in East Sussex are the most expensive resorts in which to park, with the average space their costing £35 each day. Newquay's parking rose from just £12 on average last year. However, visitors to Great Yarmouth in Norfolk face the biggest jump of 222 per cent in the same timeframe.

YourParkingSpace, which conducted the research, says it is a "shame" tourists are stung by the charges this August Bank Holiday. The company advises holidaymakers to pre-book spaces, an option becoming more readily available through the development and usage of apps. The firm also suggests looking at alternative options, which may include driveways of locals who undercut car park companies as they "rent out" spots.

Brannan Coady, CEO of YourParkingSpace said: "Everyone looks forward to August's bank holiday break and a final chance to enjoy a long weekend in the sun.

"So far we have had a miserable summer weather-wise, and with forecasts looking better for the coming weekend, it would be a shame if people planning to go to one of these destinations find themselves stung with exceptionally high prices.

"There are two major benefits to drivers pre-booking a space. First, there are the financial ones, but then there is also the guarantee that they will not need to spend hours trawling around looking for a potential spot."

According to the website booking a private spot - like someone's drive - could save visitors almost £30 - and spaces start from as little as £2.50 up to a maximum of £12.50 for a full-day's parking.

Parking in Eastbourne, East Sussex, has only risen on average by 40p in the past year, the study highlights. Increases weren't steep in Blackpool in Lancashire either, the poll shows.

Rother District Council in East Sussex was slammed earlier this year after deciding to charge people a whopping £30 to use a council-run car park at a popular beach in Camber Sands.

The authority said the change in price was to "get as much back into the council for the massive costs we have at Camber." However, angry locals and people hoping to visit the area insisted the changes in price mean they will no longer be going and using different beaches instead.
