Love Island star forced to defend herself after wearing £1.50 Primark handbag
Olivia Hawkins has defended herself after being shamed for 'sending the wrong message' to young girls and women with her glamorous social media updates.
The Winter Love Island 2023 star took to her Instagram on Monday to publicly respond to criticism that she was 'showing off' her lavish lifestyle, after she posted a snap of her wearing a green cocktail gown and enjoying a hotel meal on her Stories. A disgruntled fan accused Olivia, 28, of being a bad influence on her impressionable followers by uploading such glitzy shots.
"Kids and especially young people have no money these days and seeing you showing off is not helping them," the anonymous follower wrote, after urging Olivia to "do something to inspire girls" instead of "parading" her beauty online."
The Brighton native didn't take too kindly to the harsh message, which she screenshot and republished to her Stories feature with an unapologetic response.
"Never give these types of messages the time of day," she captioned the post. "No one is perfect but l've worked EXTREMELY hard my whole life to get to where I am today, nothing has ever been handed to me on a plate."
Corrie's Sue Cleaver says I'm A Celebrity stint helped her to push boundariesOlivia, who took place on the ninth series of the ITV reality show, went on to remind her followers that she too has "insecurities" and that "no one is perfect." She also squashed the insinuation that she was only wearing designer duds, adding, "PS. my bag was £1.50 from Primark."
Luckily, it seems Olivia isn't losing too much sleep over the digital trolling. Just a few hours after her epic clapback, the former 'ring girl' revealed she had landed in a sunny location following a British Airways flight that came with a row all to herself. Olivia also said she's received an 'influx of gorgeous messages' from fans since posting her stern response, adding, "You guys are the best" and signing off with heart-shaped emojis.
In April 2023, it was confirmed that Olivia and her Love Island co-star Maxwell Samuda had split up following a fleeting romance at the South African villa. The former couple had gotten together after the finance student arrived onto the show mid-way through the season, but ultimately couldn't make the relationship last once they'd been voted off.
A rep for Olivia explained the decision to part ways was mutual, adding, "Things weren’t the same between Olivia and Maxwell after they left the villa. Life has been hectic and they both decided it was best to end things."
