Ex- Manchester United star Mikael Silverstre has told the Red Devils to forget about a move for Amadou Onana, because he is no better than Scott McTominay.

The Everton star has been linked with a move to Old Trafford over the closing weeks of the transfer window. Erik ten Hag is keen to add to his midfield options on top of the three signings he has made so far this summer.

Onana - alongside Fiorentina's Sofyan Amrabat - have been identified as potential recruits. However, former Red Devil Silvestre has been left perplexed by United’s interest in the former given the fact that McTominay is already at Old Trafford.

Speaking to Bettingexpert, the Frenchman said: “I understand why, profile-wise, this is a player they are looking for. But when you have Scott McTominay, I don’t see what Onana will add to United if you want to step up and challenge for the title.

“He’s not a player United should be chasing. Physically, he and McTominay have the same profile, and it’s not an upgrade, so I don’t think it makes sense unless you’re looking for back-up.”

One solution that could present itself to Ten Hag could be to move McTominay on before pursuing a deal for either Onana or Amrabat. It is thought that the Dutchman would be open to letting the academy graduate move on this summer.

West Ham have been linked with a move for him and were previously eyeing in a double deal involving him and former Red Devils’ captain Harry Maguire. Gabriel Agbonlahor is another to have been taken aback by Ten Hag’s stance over McTominay and believes he could still have a role to play.

Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: “I looked at how Scott McTominay was up for sale and I don’t know how because he’s important to that Manchester United side. There’s going to be games where Manchester United can’t afford to play Casemiro in there on his own.

“You’ve got to get McTominay in there with him – he’s got the legs, he can score a goal as well. We’ve seen his goals for Scotland recently.”

McTominay, 26, still has two years left to run on his contract at Old Trafford. He has made 210 appearances for the Red Devils since breaking through into the first team from the academy.

He was initially named on the bench for United’s opening day win against Wolves and was only afforded a short cameo after replacing fellow academy graduate Marcus Rashford late on.
