With the summer evenings upon us, the urge for an after-work pint or glass of wine can be even harder to resist.

But the Britain's weekday boozing certainly seems to be more of a problem in some cities than others. Now a map compiled by retailers DrinkWell has revealed the country's hotspots for everyday drinking, with as many as 4 in 5 admitting they can't go a day without.

Th reduced-alcohol brand has ranked the countries' worst cities when it comes to habitants' boozing patterns during the lighter months. A study carried out by the company found more than a third (38%) admit to having at least two alcoholic drinks every day during the summer - potentially putting their health at risk.

Health experts advise 14 units a week for the average adult - with two daily large glasses of wine soon racking up to 42 units over a week. The everyday drinking problem appears to be worse among 18-25-year-olds, with a staggering 80% saying they drink everyday in the summer.

Bristol meanwhile has come out top in the list of UK cities who pound the booze after work. Some 81% of Bristolians sink a pint or glass of wine daily, DrinkWell reveals.

Commenting on the findings, nutritionist Katie Chaplin said habitual drinking could cause many health problems, including weight gain as that refreshing cider or glass of wine would be packed with sugar. "It's so easy to reduce your calorie consumption by making simple swaps and understanding calories in versus calories out," she said.

"And yes you can still enjoy yourself, eating lovely food and alcohol. There are so many options available today, that drinking full-sugar options really should be a thing of the past.”

Switching to a low-calorie glass of wine could save as much as 172 calories, Katie said. More than a fifth of those surveyed (23%) admitted to piling on the pounds during the summer as they took to the beer gardens.

Tom Bell, founder of DrinkWell, said: “What many people do not release is that you can still enjoy alcohol, including wine and beer, without having to worry about the calories. We all understand that watching our alcohol intake is a good idea, and that we should limit sugar in our diets where we can.

“However, when it comes to the calories in alcoholic drinks, we find that the alcohol itself is often wrongly blamed for the calorie intake, when in fact a lot of it is caused by sugars.”
