Before Manchester United took on Wolves in their first Premier League matches this season, Sir Alex Ferguson provided his analysis of how the club can be successful in the future, including a push for the team's new signings. The legendary manager knows it is vital for additions to buy in to what the club is all about.

Ferguson spoke about the current state of Manchester United with NBC Sports before the match. And he also sent a firm warning to any players arriving and the attitude they must bring in order to be successful when asked about the pressure that comes with joining the Old Trafford club.

"Well, there's no point them coming here if they don't understand what expectation means," Ferguson said. "The expectation of this club is huge. Every player we brought in in my time, most of them did that, accepted that.

"There's no point coming to the club if you don't have your own expectation and your own responsibility for performance. I think that's a really important part. When you recruiting someone you should really identify who you're buying. That is important. When we looked at who we were gonna buy we watched them for a long time. It wasn't an overnight thing.

"We did the right search and we were sure they were the right type for the club."

Ferguson also analysed what gave him the most hope for the club to return to the glory days enjoyed under his leadership. He praised manager Erik ten Hag but highlighted how the team had lacked a proper center-forward within the last few years. Last season, the club relied on the efforts of Cristiano Ronaldo, Anthony Martial, and Dutch loanee Wout Weghorst.

"I think Ten Hag has done a fantastic job. He's grabbed it, he's brought his own players in, and I think that's important," said Ferguson. "And if he gets the center forward ready quickly, they'll have a really good side. That's what they've really lacked is a center forward in the last few years."

"The rest of the team, the composition of the team, is very good. He's got great, experienced defenders in Varane and Martinez. And in experience in midfield with Eriksen and Casemiro.

"He's got a foundation there. But the foundation is always completed by the goalkeeper and the center forward. They've a new goalkeeper who's very athletic and a center forward we hope is fit quickly."

The team's lone goal against Wolves came from Raphael Varane, who struck a header set up by Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the 76th minute of the match. Before the goal, the team struggled to create chances, getting just three shots for the entire game.

There are now high hopes for new £72m forward Rasmus Hojlund after his arrival. The Danish footballer joined United from Atalanta but is still struggling with a back injury picked up during preseason with Atalanta.

Despite a need to bolster the goal-attacking threats on the pitch, Ten Hag stressed that Hojlund would not be rushed back into the team.

"We are not in a rush," Ten Hag said. "We know without him, we have also a strong team, and the position is covered, so we don't rush in this. It is about that he is in the right level, the first fitness level, and then we have to integrate him, train and bring him in for the games so we take our time. It is not about winning in this moment, it is about winning in the long term."
