The PS5 cloud streaming service could bring Project Q a few steps forward, but is that enough to save the gaming handheld?

Sony is starting to roll out a brand new PS5 cloud streaming service, which is currently available to seemingly a few random PSN users. PS5 cloud streaming allows you to play games on your console, without having to actually download and install the titles first, and will be available as part of PlayStation Plus Premium subscription service once it gets a full release.

The service was originally rumoured to be launching at the start of this year and was then officially confirmed via a PlayStation Blog post alongside the PS Plus Extra and Premium June lineup. Sony stated that PS5 cloud streaming would be available for supported PS5 titles, which include those from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Game Trials, as well as digital PS5 games that players own.

At the moment, PS3 and PS4 classic games are already available via cloud streaming on your PS5 console. Some PSN users have been emailed to invite them to try PS5 cloud streaming via the new firmware beta.

The PS5 cloud streaming service gives you the option to choose between 720p, 1080p, 1440p and even 4K resolution according to current participating users. Sony has included a disclaimer underneath the resolution selection that states that your actual quality will depend on your network connection. When jumping into a PS5 cloud streaming session, the title you launch also seemingly loads your current save up automatically.

With the PS5 cloud streaming beta available to some users at the moment, hopefully, the service will roll out smoothly soon. As of yet, it seems to already beat out Xbox cloud streaming, available through Xbox Game Pass, which doesn't have the option for 4K output.

Is this Project Q's saving grace?

Despite information about the PS5 cloud streaming service being made public back in June, Sony had not confirmed when it was planning to roll the service out to the public. Now that the first users have got their hands on the service, it feels like the release of PS5 cloud streaming will be perfectly timed to line up with the Project Q release.

If PS5 cloud streaming is available to all PS Plus Premium users prior to the launch of Project Q, then it does make the device slightly more appealing. It likely means that the same cloud streaming service will be available on the otherwise pointless gaming handheld, which hopefully means your PS5 console doesn't have to be left on in order to use your Project Q, as previously thought.

However, as much as PS5 cloud streaming does give Project Q some bonus points, it still doesn't differentiate it from other tragic cloud-based gaming handhelds like the Logitech G Cloud. Sony has to do way more to cater to the masses with its currently destined-to-fail Project Q device.
