Oppenheimer starlet Emily Blunt has revealed which iconic Marvel role she missed out on, which in turn lost her an eye-watering amount of cash for forgoing it.

The Devil Wears Prada actress, 40, has spoken of how a rival actress got a massive payday in the form of an $80 million (£63m) salary for starring in a hit Marvel movie. Emily turned down the offer of starring in the movie back in 2010 due to other commitments, with her now revealing what she missed out on and who took on the role she forwent.

The Wandsworth-born British actress, who became a naturalised citizen of the United States in 2015, has spoken of how she was unable to accept the leading role as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe due to contractual obligations while starring in 2010's Gulliver's Travels.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Emily revealed that Scarlett Johansson, who landed the role of Black Widow and made it famous, was "amazing" at portraying the fierce super hero. She added that she was the best person for the role before gushing over her portrayal.

Emily said: "Come on, the best girl got it," before addressing other MCU roles she had allegedly been offered. In the past rumours spiralled that Emily was meant to have played the roles of Captain Marvel, Peggy Carter and Sue Storm.

Shutting down the aforementioned speculations, Emily said that it was all just "rumours, talk, queries, that kind of thing".

Scarlett Johansson took on the role of Black Widow in 2010 for the Iron Man 2 movie. She then reprised the famous role for a string of other flicks such as The Avengers, Captain America and Avengers: Endgame. It has been reported that Scarlett has earned a staggering $80 million for her role in the entire franchise - including her Disney stint in the Black Widow flick.

In 2021, Scarlett starred in the Disney flick that revolved around Black Widow, although this ended with a lawsuit that caused the starlet both "pain and triumph".

The studio released Black Widow on Disney+ and in cinemas amid the global Coronavirus pandemic around two years ago, with the actress claiming that Disney had "breached" the contract they had with her. Suing them in 2021, Scarlett alleged that Disney breached her contract by releasing the Marvel film on Disney+, which would in turn reduce her financial stake in the film.

Scarlett had agreed in the contract that her salary would largely be based on the film’s box office numbers, with the studio then revealing her $20 million upfront salary when she sued the company.

The two parties came to a settlement in the autumn of 2021, with the terms of it not publicly disclosed, and seemingly no bad blood between Scarlett and Disney. She even spoke out back in May in an interview with Variety when she said: "I believe in the magic of Disney."
