When it comes to fright night this Halloween, look no further than Netflix for the scream of the crop.

The streaming platform has more ghoulish goings-on and spooktacular stories than you can shake a witch's broomstick at, but you have to know where to look. There's a sinister classic from 2004 where the Jigsaw Killer tests his victims' will to live by putting them through a series of deadly 'games', or there's the one that serves up a potent cocktail of terror with the classic ingredients of a creepy kid, the astral plane and a demon.

From cult classics to scary slashers, there's a smorgasbord of horror to digest over the coming weeks. So why save it until Halloween? Go on, grab that popcorn, snuggle up on the sofa and prepare to be absolutely terrified!

Saw (2004)

The sheer terror found in Saw may be more psychological than physical, but it's all the more effective for that. Its simple premise has a pair of strangers awaken in a room with no recollection of how they got there. But it isn't long before they soon find out they're pawns in a deadly game at the hands of a notorious serial killer. Full of demented twists and turns, this is a nasty piece of work and no mistake!

Evil Dead (2013)

The one where a group of mates head to a remote cabin, stumble across a Book of the Dead, and unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods. This is a reboot of the 1981 Bruce Campbell classic, except it's notably lacking in the absurd humour. Instead, we get lashings of sick horror, which really goes to town on the blood-and-guts. Dare we say this is more terrifying than the original? Well it is! Lambasted by some as lacking in creativity, others were quick to praise its barrage of bloodthirsty havoc.

Insidious (2010)

Now this is one film that has all the right ingredients to freak you out - a creepy kid, the astral plane and a demon. Packed with spine-tingling chills and memorably grotesque imagery, Insidious manages to scare the hell out of its audience in remarkably assured fashion. Don't say we didn't warn you!

A Quiet Place Part II (2020)

Here we rejoin the Abbott family's fight for survival.. Forced to venture into the unknown, they rapidly discover that the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats that lurk beyond the sand path. Widely regarded as one of the best sequels of the genre, this is a suspenseful and thrilling film riddled with tension. Nailbiting stuff.

Under The Shadow (2016)

This chillingly provocative horror sees a Tehran woman and her daughter trapped inside with a malevolent being during the height of the Iran-Iraq war in the 80s. A skillfully blended slow-burner with more than its fair share of unsettling shocks, Under The Shadow is tense, unusual and well worth seeing this Halloween.

Last Night In Soho (2021)

The intriguing premise sees an aspiring fashion designer mysteriously able to enter the 1960s, where she meets a beguiling wannabe singer. But the glamour is not all it appears to be as the dreams of the past start to crack and splinter into something far more sinister. This acclaimed psychological thriller is certainly not for the faint hearted, with Last Night In Soho ably nailing that creepy-ghost-story-with-a-twist trope.

Zombieland (2009)

With its classic premise of a virus turning most people into zombies - thus thrusting the world's surviving humans to remain locked in an ongoing battle against the hungry undead - this zany, splat-tastic gore-fest ticks all the right boxes. With its quick pace and witty writing wrapped around the genre's standard overdose of blood and guts, Zombieland makes for a great fright night choice.

Annihilation (2018)

Biologist and former soldier Lena joins a mission to find out what happened to her husband inside Area X - a sinister and mysterious phenomenon expanding across the American coastline. The expedition then stumbles across a world of mutated landscapes and creatures, all summoned up with astonishing special effects. Annihilation both challenges and subverts the genre to thrilling effect, and as such is well worth your time.

Paranormal Activity (2007)

In a homage to The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity riffs on the whole 'found footage' premise. New homeowners become increasingly disturbed by what appears to be a supernatural presence in the building. Hoping to capture evidence of it on film, they set up video cameras around the house - but are not prepared for the terrifying events that follow. A short, sharp shock of a movie, but it's pretty potent while it lasts.

Gerald's Game (2017)

Stephen King adaptation sees a flagging married couple desperate to reignite the flames of passion. As such, they check into an isolated lake house for a kinky romp, but then he dies of a sudden heart attack while she’s handcuffed to the bed. An admittedly absurd premise actually gives way to a surprisingly effective chiller.
