Cornwall has been voted the best place to take children for a stay-at-home holiday.

It topped a list of 20 destinations picked by parents, with the Lake District second. Seaside areas such as Devon, Blackpool and Brighton were also a hit for people snubbing sunshine trips abroad. But a surprising number of cities made the list too including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Edinburgh.

Many parents said educational places and a good mix of restaurants and cafes, plus cheap days out, make the perfect holiday. But the study, involving 2,000 people for Premier Inns, found bargain-hunters will spend an average of £142 on a day out. It also said we are going on more staycations than ever before.

A spokesman for Premier Inn added: “Not only do stay-cations promote relaxation and rejuvenation, but they also empower us to support our local communities and appreciate the wonders that lie just beyond our own front doors.

“So, let’s embark on a journey of exploration, right where we are, and unlock the glorious sights of our home sweet home.”
