Manchester United have confirmed that Amad Diallo will miss the "first part" of the 2023/24 campaign after picking up a knee injury in pre-season.

The Ivorian picked up the problem during the Red Devils' 2-0 victory over Arsenal last month. After coming on at half-time, Diallo had to be replaced 13 minutes later following a series of tough challenges.

Later on, Diallo could be seen leaving the stadium on crutches and there were fears that the 21-year-old may have picked up a serious injury. Diallo confirmed a day after the win over Arsenal that this was not the case. He said via Instagram: "I feared the worst, ALHAMDOULILAH nothing serious, back soon Inch'ALLAH."

Now, United have released a statement confirming Diallo will miss the Red Devils' opening Premier League game against Wolves on August 14. A club statement read: "Manchester United winger Amad will miss the first part of the Premier League season.

"The 21-year-old sustained a knee injury during the tour of the United States that is going to keep him out of action. It is a blow to the youngster's hopes of making his mark, after being involved in the earlier stages of our pre-season campaign."

"Unfortunately, he has also been ruled out of the first part of the 2023/24 campaign, and we await further details on his estimated recovery date, with the home league clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers up first for Erik ten Hag's Reds on Monday 14 August," United added.

Amad's latest injury blow could all but rule the wide-man out from leaving the Red Devils on loan this summer. He had been linked with a move to Leeds, Leicester, Southampton, Sheffield United and Burnley among others, while former club Sunderland also wanted to re-sign the player.

Erik ten Hag may now have to keep him at Old Trafford for the 2023/24, with deadline day less than a month away. Amad impressed on loan at Sunderland last term, scoring 14 times in 42 appearances.

The Dutchman spoke about Diallo's future following the Red Devils' win over Leeds. Ten Hag said: "You don't make conclusions after one week.

He added: "Some of the young players impressed me, but I don’t want to single someone out. We are just in the first week, and I expected these levels and these performances.

"I will tell them during our sessions what I expect from them. How we judge the levels, the performance on Wednesday, what they have to work on. But after one week I never make conclusions."
