Two killers who stabbed a young man as he walked home from a trip to Waitrose have been jailed for life.

Rashid Gedel, 22, and Shiroh Ambersley, 23, have each been jailed at the Old Bailey for life with a minimum term of 27 years for the murder of 22-year-old Sven Badzak in February 2021. The victim had popped out from the family home in Maida Vale, West London, to do some shopping in Waitrose before going up to his favourite bagel shop on Willesden Lane.

While waiting outside the bagel shop with a friend, the pair were attacked. Aspiring lawyer Sven tragically died at the scene while his friend, 16, was taken to hospital following the violence.

Asked what she thought of how the Metropolitan Police dealt with the crime on Times Radio, Mr Badzak's mother, Jasna, said: "It was horrendous for us, they were saying that it was gang-related violence, implying that Sven was a gangster." She added it became a "problem" for police to get CCTV and they were "very reluctant to do that".

Ms Badzak, who was previously a protected witness in two trials of war criminals at The Hague after fleeing her native Yugoslavia, earlier told The Times: "Putting criminals behind bars in The Hague was a piece of cake compared with dealing with the Metropolitan police." She described her son as "calm and collected" and said he "never, ever had any altercations with anybody who would be involved in something like that".

The mum, a former Conservative Party activist, added she was threatened with arrest for "interfering with the investigation". She added: "I was demanding that they arrest the killers and even arresting any one of them would take at least seven to 10 days."

Prosecutor Anthony Orchard KC said the victims were targeted in a "gang-style attack" over what the killers regarded as their drugs territory. He told jurors: "Neither victim was a gang member or associate. It appears they were the unfortunate victims of mistaken identity."

Mr Orchard said: "As the two friends walked west on Willesden Lane, Gedel drew closer to them. Sven Badzak and his friend were wholly unaware of what was about to happen." Jurors were shown CCTV footage of the pair walking together when their paths crossed with the killers, with one of the attackers asking: "What are you on?"

Mr Badzak was stabbed in the chest while his friend was stabbed in the back but managed to run off pursued by some of the attackers. Mr Badzak dropped his Waitrose shopping bag as he fled and collapsed outside a burger restaurant.

Mr Orchard said: "His attackers catch up with him on the ground. It appears he was kicked and punched. During the totality of the attack, he was stabbed four times. His phone fell to the ground. No attacker attempted to retrieve it. At least one of those attacking him shouted out. The attack on Sven Badzak lasts no more than 20 seconds."
