Liam Payne opened up about the 'scars' that One Direction left him in a candid new interview. The 29-year-old auditioned for The X Factor in 2010 and was placed into a group with four others to form the band.

Members of the band, which has been on indefinite hiatus since 2016, include Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Liam. The group went on to become one of the best-selling boybands of all time.

The stars went their separate ways to work on their own solo projects, with Liam opening up about his struggles throughout the years. In a recent interview, the singer opened up about the realities of becoming famous so young without knowing what fame actually means. "I don't really know if I knew what I signed up for when I started and I've been doing my job since I was 14 years old I've been very lucky to hold the job for that long which is great but I do think it definitely left scars on me," he said on Colombia's W Radio.

"You have to unpack a lot of stuff before you start this job. I wouldn't change a thing now that I am where I am, I've kind of made my own sense of why I ended up at this place."

He added: "And like I said, it definitely gave me something to say and if I can help anybody out in my position, not so much on the fame side but the things that happened to me before and kind of stop that from happening to somebody else, that would be my life's dream.

"It's a great life and I have a lot of gratitude (..) but there were definitely low moments that I'll never minimise but it's just about having the right people around you at the right time and I was lucky to have people to watch my back when I was at my worst place and help me get the help that I need and not everybody is that lucky so, I'm double grateful to be on the other side of it now and to have something to say and like I said, it might change somebody's life."

Last month, Liam said he spent 100 days in a wellness clinic after 'no longer recognising himself'. He explained how he hit rock bottom and lashed out at the people in his life while trying to navigate his life after One Direction.

Liam said he managed to get his life back on track with the help of ex-partner, Girls Aloud singer Cheryl, whom he shares six-year-old son Bear with. He said the decision to seek help in the Louisiana centre was supported by Cheryl.

He said: “There is a point when you hit rock bottom and you realise you have got to do something different as whatever you are doing right now isn’t working for you. I was in bad shape up until that point. Honestly, more than anything I want to say thank you to Bear and his mum for giving me a little bit of freedom to go and get well."
