The mum who murdered her own two kids was not sad or ashamed during her sentencing, a body language expert has said.

Lori Vallow Daybell, convicted of killing two children and conspiring to help kill her former romantic rival, was sentenced to life in prison on Monday, and she appeared to show no anxiety or sadness during the trial.

Vallow will serve three life sentences, one after the other, the judge said yesterday in a very emotional courtroom. The jury heard testimony from several representatives of the victims, including Vallow's only surviving son, Colby Ryan. During this, Lori sat on the stand, completely stoic.

"She's not collapsed down, she's not ashamed, she's not sad, she's not crying," body language expert Patti Wood said. "So I think that is part of what makes, watching this, you feel her creepiness, you feel the oddness of her behaviour."

Wood, who is the author of SNAP: Making the Most of First Impressions, Body Language, and Charisma, thought the position of Vallow's legs showed that the woman is trying to protect herself in a subtle way. "I can tell that her legs are crossed underneath the table, and they're crossed away from the sister giving the testimony," the expert told the US Sun.

"The very subtle thing she does to block out kind of and protect herself is that subtle leg cross," continues Wood. "She doesn't rock her leg. She doesn't tap her foot. During this, they stayed fairly still," she said. "So I am not seeing even normal anxiety cues, and the feet are typically the most telling aspects of body language."

Wood concluded: "That tells me how cold she is about it." Vallow sat slightly behind her defence attorney during yesterday's trial. By sitting a little behind the lawyer, "she's chosen a protective position," Wood explained.

Vallow, 50, was found guilty on May 12 of murdering her two children, Tylee Ryan, 16, and Joshua 'JJ' Vallow, seven, as well as her current husband's former wife, Tammy, as well as grand theft. The children, Tylee and JJ, disappeared without a trace in 2019, and the 49-year-old mother of three, Vallow, refused to tell authorities or anyone else their whereabouts, instead engaging in a consulted cover-up.

On the first-degree murder of Tylee Ryan, Vallow was sentenced to life in prison without parole. For the first-degree murder of JJ, she was sentenced to life without parole.

On the conspiracy counts, the first being conspiracy to commit the murder of Tylee and grand theft by deception, she was sentenced to life without parole. For the third count, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder of JJ and grand theft by deception, she was also sentenced to life without parole. On the fifth count, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder of Tammy Daybell, she was sentenced to life without parole.

Sentencing her, Judge Boyce said a mother murdering her children is one of the most horrific crimes. Discussing her potential sentence, he said: “You’ve been convicted of and committed the more serious crimes possible, and those crimes deserve the most serious punishment.”

Judge Boyce said Vallow went down a "bizarre religious rabbit hole and you are clearly still there". He went on to talk about her fleeing to Hawaii, saying she used "blood money" to fund her new life as the police and public searched for her children, who he said were "found mutilated and buried like animals."

He said the crime scene was a "horrific thing to have to review", with images he will "never get out of [his] mind", though he was only looking at the pictures, not at the gruesome scene like law enforcement officials who recovered the remains.

Speaking prior to her sentencing, Vallow had a chilling response: "Jesus knows me. And Jesus understands me. I mourn with all of you who mourn my children and Tammy. Jesus Christ knows the truth of what happened here. Jesus Christ knows that no one was murdered in this case."
