Diet expert hails six 'aphrodisiac' foods to give your sex life a boost
There may be a number of reasons as to why you're just not in the mood in the bedroom - but thankfully there are a number of superfoods you can include in your diet to get your mojo back. Nutrition and dieting expert Dr Michael Mosley claims these simple foods can give your sex life a boost and work wonders in the bedroom, Bristol Live reports.
We've all heard that certain foods can put you in the mood, but now Dr Mosley has confirmed this is the case on his Fast800 blog. Sharing the the foods you need to incorporate to improve your libido, he wrote: "Throughout history, certain foods and drinks have had a reputation for improving sexual arousal or experience.
"You may have heard of the term 'aphrodisiac' before: a Greek derivative pertaining to Aphrodite, the goddess of love. While you might be familiar with some foods such as oysters, asparagus or chocolate being commonly believed to be aphrodisiacs, their effects on sexual experience are often not backed by science or credible studies.
"The benefits of a Mediterranean diet however, have been well researched and it is known to promote the eating of nutritious foods that are backed by science, many of which are foods that improve your sex life. In one study, women who consistently ate a Mediterranean-style diet scored higher on desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction."
The pro also stated that there are a number benefits that a nutritional diet can give, such as improved blood flow, heart health, boost stamina, as well as raising the levels or hormones that cause arousal.
Dr Michael Mosley shares exercise that can cut cholesterol and blood pressure"Another trial found that men who consumed more fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains and olive oil over a two-year period reported an improvement in erectile function, which tends to flag as men get older," he added.
There are many other factors that can decrease your libido, such as stress, as he explains: "Stress has a really bad effect on your libido and sexual functioning, so it makes sense to choose a diet that is rich in mood-boosting nutrients to support your emotional wellbeing and high in foods that improve your sex life."
Chickpeas and seeds
There are phytoestrogens that are found in flaxseeds, sesame seeds and chickpeas which "act in a similar way to oestrogen, an important female sex hormone", Dr Mosley explains.
He says that consuming these seeds can help with symptoms of menopause too, another time when your sex-drive will decrease.
Fatty fish
One for the men here - foods rich in omega-3 have been proven to help increase testosterone, which is crucial for sex-drive and performance.
Mosley says: "Fatty fish, such as salmon, anchovies, tuna and mussels are all excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, and have been suggested to prevent build-up of plaque in your arteries. This promotes blood flow to those all important areas of the body during sex."
Pistachio nuts
Rich in protein, healthy fats and fibre, pistachio's can also help to reduce erectile dysfunction too.
Dr Mosley adds: "One study showed males who consumed 3.5 ounces (100 grams) of pistachio nuts daily for three weeks experienced firmer erections and increased blood flow to the penis. They help lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease (which can lead to side effects such as sexual dissatisfaction)."
Leafy greens
We all know we should include green vegetables in our diet, but here's even more of a reason too, as the diet guru explains: "Leafy greens such as spinach, kale and Swiss chard are excellent sources of magnesium, which has been shown to positively affect testosterone levels."
A study performed in 2011 showed that taking magnesium supplements for a month promoted a rise in testosterone levels, regardless of how active the individual was.

Kimchi
A traditional fermented Korean vegetable, Kimchi is brimming with lots of probiotics, vitamins and minerals. Praising the food, the doctor shares: "Fermented foods, such as kimchi, are packed with probiotics, vitamins and minerals and have also been shown to help to reduce stress and anxiety, perhaps due to their impact on your gut microbiome."
