Man unearths Tesco receipt from 1997 - people can't believe price of Weetabix
We all know that our weekly shop has gotten more expensive in recent years due to the cost of living crisis that continues to rage on, but as we adjust to the staggering prices on supermarket shelves, we often find ourselves forgetting just how cheap some items used to be.
And one man's recent find has left people gobsmacked over the way inflation has impacted our pockets, as he unearthed a 26-year-old Tesco receipt that listed shockingly low prices we could only dream of today - including Weetabix for 65p, mushy peas for 35p, and mayonnaise for 49p.
The man happened to get hold of the receipt when he bought a cassette tape secondhand and happened to find the piece of paper inside the box and posted it to Reddit to share the interesting find. Posting on the Casual UK forum earlier this week, he said: "Bought an old cassette today and found a receipt inside, looked down and saw the date was 25/07/1997, 26 years ago today!"

The cheap price of Weetabix was among the most shocking costs, as a 12-pack of the cereal from Tesco today would cost you £2, while Tesco's own brand of mayonnaise is £1.15. The shopper also managed to pick up a bottle of cola - which wasn't listed as Coca-Cola on the receipt so was likely Tesco's own brand - for just 23p, and even bought two different varieties of Felix cat food for less than 50p each.

Cooking oil cost the shopper just 53p, a multi-pack of Hula Hoops was priced at 95p, and a 150g tub of yoghurt cost just 31p. Among the more expensive items on the list were shower products including an item listed as "shower creme" and Soft & Gentle deodorant, which seemed to carry similar prices as they would today, costing £1.85 and £1.79 respectively.
Commenters on the Reddit post were gobsmacked by the price of the shop, with some saying they'd done their own research on the Tesco website to see how much the same shop would cost today - with staggering results.
One person said: "I've been through the list and added all the items to my Tesco basket online to see how much it would cost these days. For those of you wondering, the total came to £45.13," before they later realised the total would be even higher, as they added: "Add another £15 say as I forgot the £10.99 item. Total is £60.13."
Many were understandably feeling the nostalgia of a time when inflation and a cost of living crisis wasn't affecting us all, with one user writing: "The prices were the freaking heaven back then and we all have to agree to that," while someone else posted: "I would kill for such prices again."
There were some that even joked about one item on the receipt being "inflation-proof" as they marvelled at the 99p garlic bread, which is actually even cheaper today thanks to Tesco's Aldi Price Match - with one baguette costing just 37p. One commenter asked: "How is garlic bread inflation-proof?", while another said: "Yeah - garlic bread and shower cream at least don't seem like prices from that long ago."
