Britain's favourite pastry snack has been revealed - and it isn't sausage rolls

Real men DO eat quiche – especially if they’re Geordies. Bruce Feirstein’s 1982 book about male stereotypes, entitled Real Men Don’t Eat Quiche, suggested any bloke worth his salt would never be seen tucking into the French savoury tart.

But a study of eating habits found that 13% of Brits say it is their favourite baked food – with 15% of fellas declaring it their third-favourite bake, behind sausage rolls (34%) and pizza (23%). Just 11% of women chose quiche as their fifth-favourite bake, behind pizza (22%), cake (21%), chocolate brownies (19%) and bread (16%).

The poll of 2,000, by baking firm Bakeaway, found men from Newcastle – the home of bakery chain Greggs – rate quiche most highly on the snack scale but those from Bradford are not fans. And Simon Bennett, 37, of Newcastle, insists there is “nothing unmanly about it at all”.

The financial analyst said his mum’s bacon, cheese and broccoli version was the “best ever”. He added: “I have loved quiche since I was a boy. I have mine with brown sauce and a plate of chips.” Quiche was first documented in France in 1605 and became popular in Britain in the 1920s.
