Shane MacGowan fans send condolences after 'best friend' Sinead O'Connor dies

Shane MacGowan fans have sent messages of condolence to the singer in hospital after his ‘best friend’ Sinead O’Connor died.

The Pogues frontman was recently in intensive care as he fights his latest health battle, though what he is suffering from hasn’t been disclosed. His wife Victoria took to Instagram to reveal the Fairytale of New York singer was still in hospital, but is now on the mend.

Sharing a selfie of them together from his hospital bed hours before his close pal Sinead’s death was announced, she wrote: “A lot of the time life goes on as normal, but sometimes things happen to shake things up and not necessarily in ways that you want!”

Given fans a health update on Shane’s condition, she continued: “We have had some pretty scary health challenges in our family recently and it has been showing me that the idea of just trusting and going with the flow is not easy!!!

“When you feel love in your heart you stay focused on the present instead of worrying about the future. And you literally take heart from the love that you feel for your special person and also for all of the doctors and nurses and staff, family and friends and everyone around you.”

Sinead and Shane had been friends for years and duetted on the song Haunted together for the 1986 film Sid and Nancy. A clip of the pair giving a joint interview to Pat Kenny in the mid-1990s has since resurfaced on social media.

Discussing their song, Shane, who knew Sex Pistols star Sid Vicious and his girlfriend Nancy Spungen, said the track was "happy in a way cos they’re reunited somewhere else."

Sinead then opened up about her own mortality and added: "What are we all doing here, how does the earth hang in space and what’s going to happen to me when I die, is it going to be slow and painful? But I think if you get through birth which is the most difficult passage then death is surely a breeze."

Sinead was found unresponsive at her home in Lambeth, south London, on the morning of July 26. Her cause of death is yet to be revealed, but she was pronounced dead at the scene and it is not being treated as suspicious.
