Shane MacGowan’s Pogues bandmates have visited the icon in hospital amid his illness.

Victoria Mary Clarke has shared that her husband was visited by his friends almost a year after he was first taken to hospital. She took to Twitter to say that Peter Richard 'Spider' Stacy and Terry Woods went to the hospital where he's been since June.

She said: "Love and prayers for everyone who is struggling right now. Hang in there!" She also attached a photo of Shane to her post as she gave his fans a latest look at the ill musician who is now using breathing tubes.

The 65-year-old music star is said to be suffering from viral encephalitis - which is an inflammation of the brain caused by a virus. Since December last year, Shane has been receiving treatment, with his wife often giving updates about him via social media

This Friday, Victoria shared another picture of Shane smiling from his hospital bed, while also giving an update on his condition. The Pogues frontman has been in intensive care since September this year, but there are hopes he will be well enough to be released before Christmas.

Sharing a snap via Twitter, Victoria wrote: "Shane is feeling much better today! I am so grateful to everyone who is willing him to get home for the Christmas! @ShaneMacGowan @poguesofficial @EtainsDream."

Fans replied back saying they were happy to hear Shane could be on the mend. One said: "Delighted Victoria to hear Shane is feeling better. Sending you guys all of my best wishes."

A second wrote: "Glad he’s feeling better. Hope you’re getting some rest," while another added: "Positive thoughts for your Christmas wish."

Earlier on in the week, Victoria took to her Instagram page where she posted a photo of herself kissing Shane in his hospital bed and said that her feelings of love are helping her support her husband during his health battle. She wrote: "Love is the most beautiful and powerful thing that we can experience as humans but love can also feel painful especially if you are afraid of losing a person or anything else that you love.

"The really really big challenge that we all face is to go beyond what our minds think are the limits of love and what love really is. A lot of the time that thing we call love can more accurately be described as attachment or desire or need or longing or closeness or connection.

"And all of these are totally valuable and human and we need to acknowledge and appreciate and accept every part of our experience. But sometimes when you love very deeply you will find yourself facing terrifying fears of loss that can feel so big and devastating that you don’t know how you can survive them and you can’t imagine life without this person that you love."

She added: "We can choose to stay present with everything that unfolds and to feel as much as possible in every moment and we can be surprised that there are more moments of beauty and grace and even joy than we ever imagined. Stay tuned in to love no matter what is happening in your world and keep inviting all of your angels and guides to support you and know that love is always the best choice!"
