The Pogues' Shane MacGowan shares major update as he 'prays' for peace

Shane MacGowan has shared a message urging for love and peace as he continues to battle health conditions and the world is shaken by global conflict.

The 65-year-old musician - who is the lead singer of the iconic punk band The Pogues - has been battling health issues for the past year. The star was rushed to hospital last Christmas and has been receiving treatment in the months since.

Shane’s devoted wife, journalist Victoria Clarke, 57, has been caring for him and keeping him company when he has been in the hospital. And she has also been keeping fans updated on his condition with regular updates shared via social media.

Victoria has also been able to share updates from Shane himself by relaying his words through Twitter and social posts. On Sunday, Victoria took to X to share a photo of Shane smiling from his hospital bed, while also sharing a positive message he shared for the world - shared at a time when many are concerned about the developing war in the Middle East as Israel fights Hamas and Europe continues to be threatened by conflict caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Victoria wrote: "Shane is praying for peace and love [heart emoji] for everyone in the world @ShaneMacGowan @poguesofficial." Fans were quick to respond to the message, with one writing: "Speedy recovery Shane. Sensing love to you both" And another added: "Lovely! Thank you, Shane! We're also sending great energy right back at you, legend!"

A further fan responded to the post to write: “Thank you Shane and Victoria. May peace and love be at your side too. We need it so much these days. A warm hug from Belgium.”

Fans of the Fairytale Of New York singer were alarmed last December when Victoria revealed he had been rushed to hospital. She wrote on Twitter at the time: “Please send prayers and healing vibes to @ShaneMacGowan in hospital again and really hoping to get out ASAP!! Thank you.”

Shane was later revealed to have been diagnosed with the rare brain condition encephalitis - a condition that the NHS explains as “an uncommon but serious condition in which the brain becomes inflamed… it can be life-threatening and requires urgent treatment in hospital.” Following his initial hospitalisation, Shane has been in and out of hospital, and Victoria has been updating fans on his condition - both via social media and in the press.

Speaking to the Sunday Independent recently, Victoria said: "The timeline keeps changing. It depends on him being able to get his strength up. It’s very difficult if somebody is immobile for any length of time, as Shane was before he went into hospital.

"It means you are prone to things like pneumonia and bed sores, which lower immunity and make you weaker. Shane has other complications which make it difficult for him to do the exercises he needs to do."
