The head of Florida’s largest police department is now in stable condition after shooting himself on a busy interstate following a domestic argument.

Alfredo “Freddy” Ramirez, 52, director of the Miami-Dade police department, and his wife Jody had earlier been asked to leave a hotel, where he was attending a sheriffs’ association conference.

According to officials, officers were called to the hotel to investigate a report of a couple arguing and a man pointing a gun at himself.

A witness saw the official and his wife step outside the hotel around 6:30 p.m. Sunday and began arguing.

They saw Ramirez put a gun in his mouth and called 911, reports suggest. However, when Tampa police arrived, the couple denied the witness's account, and the witness had left.

A spokeswoman for Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said the mayor traveled to Tampa after the shooting to "support Director Ramirez and his family."

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said it, along with the Florida Highway Patrol, is investigating the incident. The state's law enforcement agency said no one else was injured and there is no threat to the community.

Alfredo is a 27-year veteran of the Miami-Dade police agency. In May, he announced his intention to seek election for the newly-created role of sheriff in 2024, signaling his desire to remain the leading law enforcement official.

Miramar Police Chief Delrish Moss released a statement Monday morning, saying his department is praying for the police director, his family and his department.

The statement read: "The Miramar Police Department extends urgent prayers and support to Miami-Dade Police Director Freddy Ramirez, his family, and the Miami-Dade Police Department during this challenging time.

"We come together sending positive energy and strength his way. May Director Ramirez find the courage and resilience to overcome this obstacle, and may his recovery be swift and complete.

"To the brave men and women of the Miami Dade-Police Department, we extend our gratitude for your unwavering dedication and commitment to public safety. Your sacrifices do not go unnoticed, and we thank you for your tireless efforts every day.

"As a law enforcement community, we channel our collective strength and support to aid in Director Ramirez's healing process."
