Man Utd's new away kit launched after early 'leaks' and 'horrendous' criticism
Manchester United have launched their new away kit ahead of the upcoming season, with Adidas designing a kit which bears references to the club’s history.
The kit has been officially launched by Adidas following weeks of speculation on social media. The new shirt has been put on sale, with fans able to purchase the new release from Monday, 24 July from both Adidas and Man United’s official stores. It had previously been 'leaked' online, with some fans labelling it as "absolutely horrendous".
The shirt has large green vertical stripes, with smaller white and red lines. The vertical striped design is a homage to some of the club’s earliest away shirts, with its green base also a reference to the club’s original colours of green and gold, worn by Newton Heath FC, latterly becoming a symbol of fans’ protests against the club’s ownership.
The launch comes after the home kit was released last month, with Erik ten Hag’s side having worn their new red kit on multiple occasions already during pre-season. Now, they have a new shirt to wear during their ongoing tour of the USA before returning to England for the start of the Premier League season and a return to the Champions League,
Inigo Turner, Design Director at Adidas said: “We’re incredibly excited to return to a design that is fundamental to the heritage of this great club. Vertical stripes are in the DNA of Manchester United and we hope this bold new look captures the imaginations of fans as they travel the globe supporting the team. We have intentionally taken cues from the city itself, to provide both the players and travelling fans with a piece of home, wherever they are wearing it.”
Marcel Sabitzer completes Man Utd transfer after last-minute deadline day dashImages of the shirt before its launch, with fans divided on the new design having gained a glimpse of the shirt’s design as the photoshoot starring Luke Shaw reached social media. This leak has proven to be a legitimate one, with the released shirt matching that which was featured in the pictures online.
United’s home kit launch was also leaked early, with Manchester rapper Aitch wearing the new home shirt on stage at Glastonbury. Using such tactics to promote their new kits appears to have become a theme for United and Adidas upon the release of new United jerseys, with Irish band, The Courteeners’, frontman Liam Fray pictured over the weekend in the new away shirt.
The kit will be worn for the first time when United face Wrexham in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday, 25 July in San Diego.
