A holidaymaker has been "tasered and dragged off" a Jet2 flight from the UK in dramatic scenes after he was reported to have become "unruly".

The flight from Edinburgh was forced to make an unscheduled stop on Porto Santo Island in Madeira, over 300 miles away from its destination.

Video footage (see below) shows a 26-year-old man being taken across a runway by security personnel after being removed from the Tenerife-bound plane.

Reports say some passengers were delayed for 27 hours following the incident on Monday, which also saw a woman removed from the aircraft.

A clip shared online by Portuguese newspaper Diario de Noticias showed two passengers being taken off the plane by police.

Three workers in yellow jackets are seen restraining the man before he is escorted across the runway.

A woman is also led to the airport by airport staff not far behind.

In a statement, Madeira Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) said a foreign national had been arrested "for the crime of disobeying the legitimate order of the Commander of an aircraft".

PSP said the plane made the unscheduled landing at Porto Santo following reports of a "disorderly passenger" whose "behaviour raised immediate concerns among the crew".

They also shared that officers had used "an electric weapon of low lethal potential" to "guarantee the safety of the other passengers and crew" after the male passenger refused to cooperate.

"The citizen ended up being detained by the police present there for the crime of disobedience, following the normal procedural steps, and the flight continued to its destination", they added.

A Jet2 spokesperson said: "We can confirm that flight LS727 from Edinburgh to Tenerife diverted to Porto Santo on Monday 17th July so that police could offload a disruptive passenger.

"As a result of this diversion, the Tenerife to Edinburgh flight was subsequently delayed, however our teams did everything to look after customers including providing hotel accommodation and refreshments."

The emergency landing in Portugal appears to have left a number of local people frustrated, with one person saying similar incidents have been reported before as a result of passenger behaviour.

Responding to the Diario de Noticias story, a reader said: "This is happening a bit too often. Apart from the obvious safety of all the passengers it costs the plane company an enormous amount of money to take off again."

Earlier this year, a Jet2 passenger was reportedly banned for life after he allegedly peed inside the cabin and displayed "aggressive" and "disgraceful" behaviour on a flight to Tenerife.

The man on the flight from Glasgow airport caused major disruption with claims he urinated inside the cabin, scaring children and fellow passengers on the plane.

A passenger was also removed from a UK-bound Jet2 flight at the start of the month after he allegedly attempted to open the aircraft door while the plane was in the air.

The flight had departed Milas-Bodrum Airport in Turkey late on July 2, and was due to land in Glasgow just a few hours later.

But the pilot was forced to land the plane in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia, where a man was removed before the flight continued on its journey.
