James Martin has been flooded with supportive messages after he give an insight into his challenging life growing up.

The telly chef has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate from University of Bolton.

James proudly posted about the achievement, which means even more to him following a difficult start to his life.

He previously talked about struggling at school when he was a boy. Severely dyslexic, James said that he didn't have a lot in his childhood and is rightly proud he is now so well regarded in the industry.

The condition – a learning disorder that makes reading particularly challenging – has not held him back in his successful career as a TV chef.

He told fans: "Wow, what a honour! Today I received an Honorary Doctorate from University of Bolton. Firstly, what joy it was to see all the amazing people graduating today and I wish them all the very best.

"Secondly, thank you University of Bolton for this. As a young lad who academically didn’t have a lot to enter the world at the start, getting this means so much. Chuffed to bits! Professor and now Doctor Martin! Thank you!!"

He revealed to Woman and Home last year: "I failed cookery in school because I was dyslexic, still am. Severely dyslexic. I’ve never read a book in my life."

However, his reading difficulties reared their ugly head once again when he crossed over into television. James poignantly revealed the criticism he received on Twitter because of his struggles with reading the autocue.

"A couple of mean tweets, they started slagging me off about the way I read autocue," he said in the post.

After his heartfelt revelation about his past, celebrities and fans rushing to support him.

His former Strictly Come Dancing partner Camilla Dallerup, ex-This Morning colleague host Ruth Langsford, Kirsty Gallagher and First Dates bartender Merlin Griffiths were among many to congratulate him on the achievement.

Ruth said: "How fantastic! Congratulations Doctor Martin!"

Michelin-star chef Galton Blackiston from Norfolk added: "Whaaat a Yorkshireman as well."

His fans were quick to say well done and know how important his message is.

One told him: "Well done, great for all dyslexics everywhere."

Another recalled: "I remember an episode of Home Comforts you did, and you read your school report to the camera. My how your teacher would have been proud I'm sure."

A third said on twitter: "When I listened to you talk on Dyslexia, (as a person who has worked extensively within Education), it was so moving. I understand the journey it takes on all levels to reach personal goals. Today stand proud fella, a beautiful award for the most wonderful of souls."

James Martin's Saturday Morning show will not be aired for the coming months.

The latest series has ended and is not due to return to ITV until after the Summer holidays.
