The late Tony Bennett had expressed regret following the death of his one-time collaborator Amy Winehouse, with him having also described her passing as like "losing a daughter".

Tony - who it has been announced died recently, aged 96 - worked with some of the biggest names in the industry over the course of his own award-winning career in music.

This included collaborating with the late singer Amy on the song Body and Soul, which was recorded in early 2011 just months before she passed away on July 23 that year.

The duet - which is said to have been her final recording - featured on his album Duets II and her posthumous compilation album Lioness: Hidden Treasures. It earned them a Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance in 2012.

He said in his tribute: "She was an extraordinary musician with a rare intuition as a vocalist and I am truly devastated that her exceptional talent and has come to such an early end.

"She was a lovely and intelligent person and when we recorded together she gave a soulful and extraordinary performance."

As previously reported, Tony wrote about Amy in his memoir, Just Getting Started, suggesting that he regretted not sharing his own experience with substance abuse prior to her death.

He wrote: "Should I have told her that I’d contended a little bit myself and knew how you can fall into a bad cycle, but I also knew that you could bring yourself back?

"Would it have made a difference if someone she considered an idol had said to her something like, ‘You’re my idol. You are a once-in-a-lifetime talent. Please don’t take that from the world’?"

It was reported that Tony said he wept when he heard the news, saying that it was for the loss to her family and to music, as well as for his own "questions and regrets."

Tony told the Mirror in 2014: "It hit my heart very badly when I heard she'd passed away. She was a great jazz singer and when I got the call [...] it felt like I'd lost a daughter."

According to the Daily Mail, he once described Amy's passing as "one of the saddest things that ever happened in [his] life" and said she was "very special" and "so talented".

The pair are said to have recorded their duet at Abbey Road Studios, with Tony having once recalled that Amy said she was "nervous" because she was a big fan of his.

He's quoted as having written in his memoir: "She said she was nervous because she had never recorded a song with someone she considered to be one of her idols".
