The 'dancing girls' emoji has a different meaning

Emojis are little icons that we use on a daily basis, many of us without thinking too deeply about it, to hammer home how we really feel about something. Whether it's the rolling-on-the-floor laughing emoji, love hearts in abundance, or the tongue sticking out emojis, there's one for every occasion and mood.

But this World Emoji Day (17 July) people are only just realising the real meaning behind the seemingly innocent 'dancing girls' emoji - and some are horrified to discover the truth. Whilst the emoji is often used to express excitement between female friends, it actually has a whole other meaning according to Emojipedia.

The emoji depicts two women, seemingly dancing, with bunny ears on, wearing plain black bodysuits and black shoes and a male version of the emoji has been available for many years now. But it has another meaning, and some people are not impressed with it.

The 'people with bunny ears' emoji meaning is: "An iteration of the Playboy Bunny known in Japan as a Bunny Girl. Usually depicted as an attractive woman wearing bunny ears, a bunny girl can also be seen in anime as a hybrid human/animal known as Kemonomimi", reports Emojipedia. They also said: "The two-person version of this emoji is often used as a display of friendship, fun, or 'let's party'."

Dictionary.com continued: "The 'people with bunny ears' (partying) emoji is variously used across digital contexts to express a fun, party-loving spirit, communicate festive and friendly sentiments, and mark content dealing with adult entertainment.

"Many people didn't realise the emoji depicted bunny ears because the ears were short in early Apple designs, and commonly deemed them ballerinas with headbands. However, the 2015 8.3 iOS update increased the size of the bunny ears by 200%, making them more prominent. This change elicited negative reviews from users, some of whom called emoji sexist for including the bunny ears, among other reasons."

When the emoji was changed, people took to Twitter to express their anger, with one writing: "But wait...why did they turn the dancing girls to playboy bunnies? That was my favorite emoji! Totally different meaning now", followed by an angry faced emoji.

"The dancing girls emoji takes on a whole new meaning", someone else commented, followed by the emoji and a red flag.
