Ed Sheeran welcomed a very special guest on stage during his Mathematics Tour as he treated fans to a surprise performance by Eminem.

The Thinking Out Loud hitmaker, 32, took to the stage at Ford Field in Detroit on Saturday night where he played a cover of Eminem's Lose Yourself. Ed joked he and his band had only rehearsed the song that day as he said: "Let's see how this goes."

As concertgoers began to sing along, a hooded figure emerged from a trap door. Fans quickly realised who the mystery guest was and went wild for Eminem.

In a video shared on Twitter, Ed teased: "He was gonna come on and do one song and I said, You can't come on in Detroit and just do one song'. Do you want another song?"

The duo then went on to perform Eminem's 2000 hit Stan, with Ed singing the verses originally performed by Dido. Following the performance, Eminem turned to the crowd and said: "I appreciate you, Detroit. I love you!"

Eminem and Ed previously teamed up to perform at the rapper's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction earlier this year. They've also collaborated on songs such as Remember the Name, River and Those Kinda Nights.

Ed has been a big fan of Eminem for years and revealed how the rapper's music helped him overcome a stutter.

During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Ed said he was "going through all sorts of speech therapy" when he was nine.

He said the thing he found the most effective was learning the The Marshall Mathers LP and "rapping it back, to back, to back, to back".
