'My train journey was ruined by woman's endless moaning on phone - nobody cared'

Travelling can be a tiring experience, and sometimes when you settle down in your train seat for a lengthy journey, you just want some peace and quiet so you can let your body relax, and maybe even take a nap.

But one woman has said a recent train journey she went on was "ruined" by another passenger, as she had her hopes of a quiet trip shattered when the passenger began talking loudly on their phone.

The mum said she can't stand people who "talk endlessly" on their phones while on a train and claimed the passenger left her particularly annoyed as she was "blethering on and on" about issues that she felt "nobody cared" about.

In a post on Mumsnet - which was posted to the Am I Being Unreasonable forum with the title, "To detest people who talk endlessly on their mobile phone on the train" - she wrote: "My journey is currently being ruined by this woman, blethering on and on and on about her 'co-parenting' problems.

"I wish I had the courage to tell her to shut up because nobody cares. Blah blah blah."

The mum's complaints have split opinions among other Mumsnet users though, as while some agreed that loud talkers can be annoying, others said the mum could solve the problem by wearing earphones to cancel out the noise.

One person said: "It's so very rude. It's worrying that so many apparently functional adults lack the most basic level of socialisation. I can't imagine being so utterly oblivious to the comfort of others."

While another added: "Can't stand it! This is why remote working was a game-changer for me and I'll (hopefully) never have to commute again!"

But a third disagreed, stating: "Well she isn't talking to you. and the person she is telling clearly cares. Get some earphones or put up and shut up is what I would recommend."

In a later update to the post, the woman insisted she doesn't have a problem with two or more people talking on the train in person, and only thinks phone conversations are "annoying" because she believes they are "anti-social".

She wrote: "There is something particularly difficult to screen out and annoying about a one-sided phone conversation, and conversations between two people in person somehow feel like normal, meaningful exchanges - understandable - and not irritating.

"A one-sided phone call is like the tinny sound from bad headphones. Just anti-social. No excuses."
