The quality of British food is often used by Americans to poke fun at their neighbours across the pond.

But with some of the suspect dishes cooked in the US coming to light, it appears they don't have much of a leg to stand on.

The current one being highlighted by Brit food supporters is 'Dishwasher Salmon.'

Unfortunately the dishwasher part of the name is no joke, the fish is cooked in the kitchen appliance.

According to a recipe on the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, preparation couldn't be easier.

It reads: "How do you do it? Take one small salmon, or a piece of salmon, wrap it well with aluminum foil (use at least two sheets), find a suitable rack in the dishwasher, insert, close the door and start the machine.

"There is no reason why you can’t wash your dishes at the same time. Just be sure the salmon is tightly wrapped."

This US 'delicacy' was once again highlighted by a popular Twitter page - No Context Brits.

Sharing a picture of a cut of fish in the dishwasher, the post read: "I don’t want to hear another bad word about beans on toast again."

One user shared their disgust, saying: "Fish, with aromas of decaying food and detergent. Lovely!"

But Americans weren't going to take this lying down. One shared a picture of the notorious English dish jellied eels in response.

Another denied it was even a widely eaten recipe, saying: "This is obvious fake news. Nobody does that here and you all know it."

The history behind this strange way of cooking salmon is unclear. Vincent Price demonstrated it when appearing on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1975. He described it as "a dish any fool can prepare".

The post by No Context Brits Twitter page has been seen almost one million times and has been shared widely.

Chef Christine Gallarym who tried the technique, wrote on recipe site Kitchnn: "Bob Blumer, host of Food Network’s The Surreal Gourmet, has been doing it for years, claiming to have cooked salmon in dishwashers around the world.

"All you have to do is wrap the salmon tightly in foil, stick the packet in the top rack, and run it on a regular cycle.

"When the cycle is done, the salmon is cooked and ready to eat."

The argument about British food vs American food plays out on social media every few years with little possibility of reconciliation.
