It has more than 3,500 restaurants across nine countries - but many Arby's customers are only just learning how the iconic chain got its name. Founded by Forrest and Leroy Raffel in Boardman, Ohio, the fast-food chain has been serving sandwiches, salads an sides to customers since July 1964.

There has been much debate over how the chain got its name, with some Reddit users believing 'Arby's' - pronounced R B's - is short for 'roast beef'. However, this isn't the case as the chain was actually named after the 'Raffel Brothers', creating the R and the B sound of Arby's.

Commenting on this revelation, one Reddit user said: "Today I leant the R B in Arby's doesn't stand for Roast Beef, it's short for Raffel Brothers, the restaurant's founders." Another user added: "I thought it was 'R B's' or 'arrr bee's'." A third user said: "I worked at Arby's when I was a teen and I always thought it meant 'America’s Roast Beef Yes Sir'."

One more user added: "I named my dog Roast Beef and I call her Arby. When people ask about it I say, 'Like the restaurant' and people usually are blown away. I wait a few seconds and then go 'Psych! It’s actually for the people who started the chain, but that’s how easy it is to believe completely made up info.' It’s often fun."

Since opening doors 58 years ago, Arby's has been following "six simple principles" to ensure its customers enjoy every visit. These include - dream big, work hard, get it done, play fair, have fun and make a difference.
