Adrien Rabiot might have to win over Manchester United fans should he move to Old Trafford after admitting he was a Liverpool fan.

The Red Devils have renewed their interest in the French midfielder this week after failing in their attempts to sign Mason Mount from Chelsea. They have lodged three bids for the England star - all of which have been turned down by the Blues.

Rabiot has been identified as a cheaper alternative with his contract with Juventus set to expire later this month. The Red Devils have launched a fresh round of talks with the former PSG star after previously being linked with a move for him 12 months ago.

Rabiot has immediately risked the wrath of supporters of his potential new employers by admitting that he was an active fan of the Red Devils’ fierce rivals Liverpool. Speaking earlier this season, he said: “I liked Liverpool so much because I was a fan of Steven Gerrard who made me dream and therefore I followed the Reds. My other idol was Zidane.”

It is not the first time that Rabiot has admitted his affection for the Merseysiders. He also claimed he was a fan back in 2017 whilst he was still with PSG.

"There are a lot of very good leagues," Rabiot told RMC. "It's also enriching to go elsewhere, but for the moment I'm happy at PSG.

"I would love to play in the Premier League. There's not necessarily any club in particular, even though when I was young I was a big Liverpool fan."

Whilst Rabiot could be donning a red shirt and turning out at Old Trafford next season, the same could have been said a year ago. A deal broke down with United failing to agree personal terms with the Frenchman and his agent.

To make matters even worse, Rabiot has admitted that he was “fortunate” that a move did not get completed in the end. Speaking in November, the midfielder said: “It’s true, there were contacts in the Premier League.

“But in the end, it was perhaps fortunate that I stayed, perhaps the best decision. The Premier League remains the most followed league, but I don’t think about the future. I stay focused on the World Cup.

“The club and I are in no hurry. There is serenity and we will have time to weigh up every possibility.”

Rabiot could potentially move to Old Trafford fresh off the back of his most impressive season as a Juventus player. The 28-year-old scored 11 goals and notched six assists in all competitions last term despite the Italian giants finishing in a lowly seventh in Serie A after a ten-point deduction.
