Newcastle is the sausage roll capital of the United Kingdom according to Greggs - and our map shows how easy it is to get your hands on a pastie near you.

A total of 2,199 Greggs outlets are spread across the UK, from Lands End to John O Groats, and over the sea to Northern Ireland.

Of every local authority area in the nation, there are more Greggs outlets in Glasgow than anywhere else (54), followed by Birmingham (49), and then Leeds (43).

But comparing the number of Greggs sausage rolls served up to communities living nearby presents a very different picture.

Greggs says its stores produce a daily average of 1,500 sausage rolls or about 545,000 in a year.

In Glasgow that adds up to 29.4m sausage rolls over the whole year, or the equivalent of 46 sausage rolls each for everyone living in the city.

Across the English border in Newcastle, there are 33 Greggs outlets producing around 17.9m sausage rolls each year. But when compared to the population that adds up to 60 sausage rolls per person, or enough to allow everyone in Newcastle to enjoy at least one savoury snack every week.

Gateshead, also in the North East, has the next highest rate of sausage rolls (58), then Merthyr Tydfil in Wales (55) and Glasgow (46).

You can see what the sausage roll rate is where you live using the Mirror’s interactive map:

As a nation, the Welsh eat more Greggs sausage rolls per person (30) than the Scots (26), English (17), and Northern Irish (five).

But across the regions, by far the most Greggs sausage rolls are consumed in the North East - 36 per person, per year. That’s much higher than in the West Midlands, the next highest of the English regions (21).

Meanwhile, Londoners have it the hardest when it comes to access to Greggs sausage rolls. Only enough are made to allow people living in the capital 12 sausage rolls each, or one per month.

The only exception is the City of London, where the results are skewed by the low population and high number of people working in the capital’s financial district.

But if the savoury snacks produced in the Square Mile were exclusively made for residents, there would be enough to feed everyone a sausage roll every day of the year and still have 77 each left over.
