Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes has pre-game tradition that confuses team-mates
Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes wore the same pair of red underwear for each game en route to winning Super Bowl LVII as a good luck charm, according to former backup quarterback Chad Henne.w
On Sunday night in Arizona, the Chiefs secured a dramatic 38-35 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in a game which will go down in history as an all-time classic. Mahomes threw for 182 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Chiefs to a sensational win, which was secured by a late field goal from kicker Harrison Butker with just eight seconds remaining.
Mahomes is a two-time MVP and secured his second ring with the thrilling win over the Eagles. After being named the league MVP on Thursday, the 27-year-old became the first reigning MVP to win the Super Bowl since Hall of Famer Kurt Warner back in 1999.
In order to pull off his historic run, Mahomes relied on superstition. According to Henne, who announced his retirement immediately after winning the championship, the Chiefs superstar quarterback is a creature of relentless habit, even down to the more eyebrow-raising examples - such as his underwear.
Speaking on ‘The Adam Schefter Podcast’, Henne insisted Mahomes simply had to wear the same pair of red underwear for each and every game as he claimed his second championship. The 37-year-old said: “He has a baseball background, so he has to have a certain thing each and every day.
Joe Burrow backs Patrick Mahomes after Kansas City Chiefs reach Super Bowl"He comes in, he does his work. His notes are written out a certain way. Same pair of underwear, which not a lot of people probably know, on gameday. He's been wearing it since I've been part of it.”
Henne has been with the Chiefs since 2018 - Mahomes’ sophomore season and first year as a starter, when he claimed his maiden MVP award. ESPN’s Adam Schefter questioned how Mahomes, who signed a deal worth over $500 million with the Chiefs, has worn the same pair of underwear his own career and Henne made sure to highlight it was just on Sundays.
“Only on Sundays,” Henne jokingly added. “On Sunday, it’s the same pair. Obviously it’s a different outfit, but yeah, ever since I’ve known him. These are things I’ve seen that nobody else has seen.
“I’ll be stretching and just glimpse up and I’m like, ‘Damn, kid’s wearing them again. This has to be a superstition or good luck charm for sure’.”
This shows how superstitious the prodigiously talented Mahomes truly is, and Henne insisted his dedication translates to studying the playbook. Henne believes Mahomes knows Andy Reid’s scheme like the back of his throwing hand, hailing his intense preparation.
“His preparation is unbelievable, how he goes about it,” Henne said. “He knows exactly how many plays are in each section on Andy Reid's call sheet. If it's off by one play, it's going to be mentioned that week. He dives into it deeply, and it's fun to watch each and every day.”
