Lady Gaga has been pictured in a preview snap of her undertaking the role of Harley Quinn in the upcoming movie Joker: Folie à deux.

The 36-year-old singer-turned actress is taking over from Margot Robbie, who made Harley iconic as she debuted as the character in DC film Suicide Squad in 2016.

Now, Lady Gaga – real name Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta – is set to give her own spin to the character as she will appear alongside Joaquin Phoenix in the upcoming 2024 flick.

The photo of the new Harley and Joker was shared by the film's director Todd Phillips, who posted the photo on his Instagram page and wrote: "Happy Valentines Day."

Meanwhile, Lady Gaga also shared the photo on her social media feeds and wrote: "Folie à Deux", which is part of the film's title and translates to madness for two.

The photo shows Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn with a maddening look in her eyes while she intesenly holds Joker's (played by Joaquin) face.

Harley has her hair tied back away from her face and appears to have blood from her nose running down to her lip.

Meanwhile the joker is staring back into his love's eyes while sporting his iconic makeup look.

Fans went wild over the sneak preview of the movie in the comments of both Lady Gaga and Todd's posts.

One wrote: "Ahhhhhhhhhh can’t wait", another added: "WE ARE ALL HYPERVENTILATING WHERE IS MY INHALER!!!!!!".

"we are so down for this," another penned alongside a fire emoji.

Others, meanwhile, made Oscar predictions as one said: "another academy award incoming".

"Oscar just for that picture," another suggested.

While a third wrote to the A Star Is Born actress: "Can not wait to see you in this movie and see you win all the awards for acting."

Lady Gaga scooped an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in 2018 with A Star Is Born, which she also worked with director Todd Phillips on.

She scooped her first Academy Award for Best Original Song for the movie's song Shallow and is currently nominated for Best Song at next month's Oscars with BloodPop for the single Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick.

The latest photo is a series of snaps which have been shared while the movie is in the early stages of production. It is expected to be released in 2024.

Last summer, Gaga confirmed she would be taking on the role in the follow up to the initial movie Joker.

She revealed the news by posted a video on her Instagram page in August, which was a musical teaser of the upcoming flick.

Lady Gaga also teased the movie's release date in the caption as she wrote: "Joker: Folie à deux 10.04.24".

She is taking over the role from actress Margot Robbie, who was rumoured to be retiring from the role after playing the character in Suicide Squad and its sequel Birds of Prey.

It's understood that Joaquin's Joker role was set in a different universe to Suicide Squad's movies, where Jared Leto undertook the role.

Margot previously told MTV she was pleased Gaga had taken the role.

She said: "It makes me so happy because I said from the very beginning, all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters, the way like Macbeth or Batman always gets passed from great actor to great actor.

"It’s such an honour to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get to have a go at playing."
