Serial killer Levi Bellfield has been quizzed in jail by detectives probing the alleged murder of a student 24 years ago.

Scotland Yard officers today visited the monster - jailed for the murder of schoolgirl Milly Dowler - at HMP Frankland for an interview behind bars.

It follows claims Bellfield admitted killing Vietnam-born Elizabeth Chau, 19, who vanished a mile from her home in Ealing, west London in April 1999.

Her body has never been found and police have drawn a blank over her disappearance.

A source said: "Police are taking his confession seriously. Elizabeth's family have always wanted answers - it's the least they deserve."

Bellfield, 54, is said to have given chilling details of Elizabeth's final moments and offered to show detectives the exact location where he buried her.

At the time of Elizabeth's disappearance he would have been 31 and working as a nightclub bouncer.

He earned the moniker the "Bus Stop Killer" because he stalked girls and young women who passed, approaching them in his van.

He was living in west London, not far from Elizabeth's last known sighting.

She vanished as she walked back from Thames Valley University after she handed in an assignment.

The final sighting on CCTV shows her walking past Ealing police station at 6pm on April 16 1999, around a mile away from her home.

Reports last month claimed Bellfield had confessed to bundling Elizabeth into a van.

His statement is understood to include how he killed her as well as admitting five other attempted murders.

Bellfield - serving two life terms - handed the confession to solicitor Theresa Clark.

He also claimed to have carried out the notorious Chillenden murders, during which Dr Lin Russell and her daughters were attacked as they walked along a country lane in Chillenden, Kent, in July 1996.

They were tied up, blindfolded, and bludgeoned with a claw hammer.

Josie, who was nine at the time, survived but suffered severe head injuries. It took a year before she could speak.

Drug addict Michael Stone, 62, was eventually jailed for the crime despite denying involvement.

He was found guilty of two charges of murder and one of attempted murder in 1998 and again in 2001, after the Court of Appeal quashed his conviction due to concerns about a prosecution witness.

In 2017 his legal team said they had seen evidence of a "full confession" by Bellfield, which he denied at the time.

Speaking to the Mirror from prison last month, Stone said: "I've been in prison for 26 years for a crime I did not commit. I know that he [Bellfield] did those murders. He's just revealed some information recently that's come to me through lawyers. It's information that he would only know if he had done it."

He added: "His crimes have hurt a lot of people, not just the people he murdered and their families. Other people have been blamed [for Bellfield's crimes]."

Paul Bacon, Stone's solicitor, called on the police to "investigate these matters afresh to effect closure" for relatives.

A spokesman said: "We can confirm we remain in contact with Elizabeth Chau’s family.

"At this time we will not be providing an ongoing commentary. We have no comment to make."

Bellfield is serving a whole-life term for the murders of Marsha McDonnell, Amelie Delagrange and schoolgirl Milly.

Milly was kidnapped and murdered in March 2002 aged 13. She was walking home when she was abducted in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey. Her body was found six months later.

Marsha was beaten to death close to her home in Hampton, Richmond, in February 2003, before Bellfield struck again in August 2004, killing 22-year-old French student Amelie on Twickenham Green, in south west London.
