Aljamain Sterling delighted in hearing praise from Conor McGregor after his split decision victory over Henry Cejudo at UFC 288 last night to retain the bantamweight world title.

The hometown hero rocked New Jersey's Prudential Center with a massive win over the returning former two-weight world champion Cejudo, who had been out of action for almost three years to the day. However, despite the bout ending with the judges split, McGregor was not complimentary of his rival, and instead heaped praise on Sterling.

Cejudo and McGregor have never seen eye-to-eye, with the pair going back-and-forth this week over the Olympic champion telling his rival that he would never train with him. And it appears that for now the Irishman has got the last laugh as he thoroughly enjoyed watching Cejudo taste defeat in New Jersey.

"Easiest money I’ve ever made," McGregor wrote in one lengthy tweet. "Not a scratch on Aljo! Congrats Funkmaster! Good little fighter is Henry but give it a rest with these agendas all the time. The guy is sub-20 fights in his career. His little feints an all ahaha omg please teach me mastermind lol. Done the splits like a stripper and got dumped on his a** he did hahaha oh lord it’s tasty."

Sterling was happy to hear the feedback from McGregor, joking that he would like his help to get into the spirits market like the Irishman has done with his Proper 12 brand. Speaking with Mirror Fighting at the post-fight press conference, the bantamweight champ declared that he hadn't had time to read the tweets, but was keen to get into business with him if possible.

"Conor's my guy, Proper 12 baby, let's go!" Sterling responded. "I didn't see the tweet yet but I would like to talk to Conor about pursuing my own rum career with my own drink, I'm looking to launch my own line, I've got some stuff lined up, designs and things like that in the works.

"I actually didn't drink in this training camp which is a first for me in a very long time. But like is about adventures and stuff like that. Eventually this door is going to close and I want to set myself up so I do appreciate the words from Conor, he was very complimentary of Merab [Dvalishvili, his training partner] before his fight with Petr Yan when we met him in Vegas.

"I like to watch him fight, he's a pioneer of the sport if you can't respect that guy, I don't know what to tell you. I know some of the stuff, some of the antics can get a bit crazy but what he's done and accomplished it's hard to ignore."
