If you use olive oil when you're cooking, you'll know that it seems like an impossible task to get the perfect amount for the recipe. It seems to come pouring out with no warning, and before you know it, the salad that needed just a drizzle of oil is drenching the leaves you lovingly prepared.

But did you know there's a trick to ensure you can pour the perfect amount, and it's already part of the packaging?

The ring pull that you remove from the bottle of oil actually has a purpose - to help you pour the oil out a lot more slowly than you could normally.

People's minds have been blown by Cooking Cards, who posts on TikTok under the same name, as he showed people how to utilise the ring pull, rather than just throwing it in the bin.

He said: "Ah, don't you hate it when you're pouring oil and it makes a mess everywhere?

"Well, I do, and trust me, try this hack and you will thank me later."

He then proceeds to remove it as normal and turn it upside down, pushing it back into where the oil pours from.

This means there's enough space around the sides of the plastic tab so the oil can still pour out, but you'll be able to avoid pouring out half of the bottle.

In the comments, people were wondering how they hadn't realised the hack sooner, as they'd been overpouring for a long time.

One wrote: "Can't believe I did not know this", followed by some exasperated emojis.

Another commented: "Brilliant! I'll be using this!"

"I've lived my whole life not knowing this", someone else fumed.

"This is genius", a TikToker praised.
