'I tried a TikTok decorating hack so you don't have to - it was a waste of time'

A woman tried a TikTok decorating hack but soon found herself regretting her decision as it was much more difficult and time-consuming than it appeared.

Homeowner Steph wanted to add some tiling to her outside decking but she didn't want it to be boring old square tiles, so she turned to TikTok for inspiration.

She found just the thing she was after, where someone advised using smashed tiles that were then rearranged into a unique order and glued down.

Steph, from Sydney, Australia, then started the technique but soon found it was much harder than she thought and required a lot of patience - and then she ran out of materials and was left stuck.

Now, Steph is warning people against trying hacks they've seen on TikTok as she believes they can be misleading.

Steph said: "I kept seeing videos like this I thought, 'surely I could do that, that doesn't look so tricky to do'. So we got to work smashing the tiles and placing them around the pergola for where we thought they would look good.

"Eventually we got them all glued down, already we were at two days full worth of work, then we started grouting."

Steph said glueing down each tile was very time consuming, describing it as "such a s**t job", and then she ran out of grout half-way through - and to make matters worse they couldn't find more in "the whole of Sydney".

She continued: "Eventually we found it, finished grouting, and we had to start cleaning. It took us a whole day so already we're at four days of solid work here.

"Once it was clean we then had to seal it, which was another half a day's worth of work.

"It looks beautiful, but it was a solid week's worth of work and we killed ourselves trying to do it, I'd leave it to the professionals."

Steph's video warning people against TikTok hacks has been viewed more than 180,000 times and people flocked to the comments to share their opinion.

One said: "Unreal - looks so so good! Love the honest review on the DIY approach."

And another commented: "Looks fantastic, and you saved a bunch of money."

Then a third wrote: "That's not bad time-wise! It looks amazing. But look at you, you are a tiler, and a pretty great one even though it was full on."
