PlayStation Showcase May 2023 is reportedly on the cards
It looks like there's going to be a PlayStation Showcase in May 2023, likely before Summer Games Fest, according to an industry insider.
With E3 2023 cancelled it's up to Sony as to when and how it'll show off the new games coming to PS4 and PS5 consoles over the next few months. And hopes are high for the next big PlayStation Showcase event, as we weren't treated to one last year. Players have had to make do with a few of the smaller PlayStation State of Play livestream events, such as the one earlier this month which made Final Fantasy 16 the star of the show.
But the company is set to host a PlayStation showcase in May, or the beginning of June at the latest, according to Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb. In a clip posted on Twitch, Grubb says that his sources have indicated we'll be getting a PlayStation Showcase ahead of Summer Game Fest, which has taken E3's spot as the game industry's event of the summer.
Grubb is fairly confident it'll take place in May but hedges his bets by expanding that pre-Summer Game Fest window to early June. "But yes, May – maybe very, very early June – that seems like the right time to get that PlayStation Showcase." He adds that PlayStation is "already hitting on all cylinders" so the showcase will serve to get fans even more excited.
Leak to leak
The PlayStation Showcase dates Grubb has offered up are in-line with his comments from his Jeff Grubb's Game Mess podcast in February. After critiquing the PlayStation State of Plays, Grubb says that Sony is "saving the good stuff for the PlayStation Showcase". Apparently, the even was set to take place last fall but it kept getting pushed back as the devs weren't ready.
PSVR 2 is already losing to the Meta Quest 2 in the VR headset battleBut now that the developers involved in the PlayStation Showcase are ready at last, Sony "should have a massive show that really sets up the second phase of the PlayStation 5."
Among the titles we're likely to see are Marvel's Spider-Man 2, given we're so close to its September 2023 release. We saw a trailer for the title at the PlayStation Showcase 2021 but it's been crickets since then. It would make sense for Sony to drop a trailer and reveal more details about the game at its own major showcase event, just months before launch.
Something else we can look forward to getting revealed is Mortal Kombat 12 according to XboxEra's Nick Baker. In an episode of the podcast from earlier this month, he cites sources telling him that Spider-Man 2 will be at the PlayStation Showcase alongside Mortal Kombat 12. Again, the game is due to launch this year, so a major Sony showcase isn't a shocker in terms of where we'll see it make an appearance.
So mark your calendars, PlayStation fans, as there's just a few weeks left before the not-so-surprise event.
