A man made a dentist "nearly cry" after splashing almost £2,000 on a new set of teeth in Turkey - and returning with 18 crowns.

Mahmoud Ismail, 35, felt insecure for years about a gap in his front teeth, and set off from Sydney, Australia, to get them fixed.

Dentists shaved down the podcast host's natural ivories, before adding the crowns.

The procedure cost Mahmoud £1,725, including transport to and from the clinic and a five-night hotel stay, while flights were an additional expense.

After sharing his experience in a TikTok video that has 3.5 million views, Mahmoud said he received flack from some dentists, with one nearly "crying" from what she saw in the clip.

"To be honest, I didn't think they would shave off the amount they did, it was more than I expected but I did feel it was a bit excessive," Mahmoud told NeedToKnow.Online.

"However, my natural teeth are already small in size so it looked worse than it should be.

"I had a bit of anxiety prior to the procedure but after seeing the professionalism of the dentist and asking many questions I felt confident."

But after receiving a barrage of negative comments, Mahmoud made it clear that he has no regrets.

He said: "I have been called many names like 'stupid', 'crazy' and 'dumb'.

"I sleep comfortably at night knowing I made this decision for me and it is only me who will reap the rewards, or on the contrary face the consequences.

"Even if my teeth get ruined in 5-10 years it would still work out extremely cheaper to go back to Turkey and fix them all over again."

Turkey has become a hotspot for dental tourism in recent years, providing a budget-friendly way for people to achieve the 'perfect' Hollywood smile.

However, cases of botched procedures have previously hit headlines with many dentists concerned about the aftermath of getting cheap veneers.

Mahmoud said: "Just like anything in life there will always be risk associated with any procedure, just like you see horror stories about plastic surgery going wrong.

"I chose Turkey because I spoke to a few friends who did their procedures there and had good experiences. It is also a country I've visited before and was familiar with.

"Also, the price was very cheap and overall would've been a great place for a holiday. They (dentists) have all attacked me saying the procedure is detrimental to my teeth and that it will not last longer than five years.

"One particular dentist almost began to cry in her video because she was very concerned.

"Apparently, the shaving down of my teeth is not good and will lead to multiple root canal treatments and dead nerves."

Despite the proposed risks, Mahmoud has not had issues from the surgery.

Some social media users have come out in his defence, left in awe at his impressive new set of pearly whites.

He added: "The reaction in person has been consistently good, most people are saying it doesn't have the fake look and it's not a blinding white like people would see with veneers.

"I was in pain for the first few days because of the pressure of the crowns on my gums, but I loved the new look but it took me time to adjust to the look given I had my gap for all my life.

"So I had a little bit of an identity crisis for the first week or so and would laugh at myself in videos/photos. I am currently smiling more with my teeth showing to the point where people have noticed it more now.

"I haven't stopped smiling for the last two months. I feel more confident in front of the camera and smile in the mirror more often."
