Most of us likely go for a routine dentist check-up every few months and think little of the way we dress or the make-up we put on ahead of the appointment.

But according to an expert this is a mistake and we should spend a little more time considering our clothing choices.

Dr Sahil Patel, a Cosmetic Dentist and the Founder of Marylebone Smile Clinic, has shared his top tips for attending dentist appointments and claimed there are certain things we should never wear to them.

Speaking to The Mirror, he explained that valuable or sentimental items are something you should definitely avoid wearing at the dentist.

"Try to avoid clothes that are valuable or sentimental as they can be damaged/stained with the water and/or coloured dental materials," he said.

"Try to wear patterned or dark colours, and avoid wearing your work shirt if you're on your lunch break! Avoid turtle necks and high-collared shirts.

"Ideal dental clothes are gym, lounge, sportswear, or anything you are most comfortable in."

The expert went on to share a list of clothing materials to steer clear of on the day of your appointment, including cashmere, tweed, wool, merino, linen, and corduroy.

Instead, he claims you should opt for anything made from elastane, polyester, cotton, bamboo fibre, Gore-Tex, nylon, polypropylene, Spandex, or recycled plastics.

And it's not just your clothing choices you need to consider, as the make-up you wear is also important.

Dr Patel added: "As many dental treatments involve water sprays, try to wear waterproof make-up and avoid mascara and fake tan. Fake eyelashes can also interfere with the safety glasses so it is best to avoid these."

"It's also good to use setting powder and/or make-up that is simple to reapply after your appointment.

"Instead of lipstick or lip gloss, try a lip balm instead – this will help prevent your lips from drying out and will not easily be washed off during your procedure."

This comes after another top dentist shared the crucial ingredient you should always look out for when buying toothpaste.

Dr Khaled Kasem, an orthodontist from Impress, claims you need to be buying fluoride toothpaste.

He said: "You should always use fluoride toothpaste, that's really crucial," he said.

"There are different types of toothpaste, but in general you want to make sure the one you're using is fluoride.

"And for children, it's important that you get a low-concentrated fluoride toothpaste, depending on the age of the patient."
