Anne Hegerty, known as The Governess to fans of The Chase, has had a successful career since first appearing on television back in 1988 in an episode of Mastermind.

The ITV brainbox has starred in several quiz shows and spin-offs, as well as I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!, leaving many viewers wondering about her life off-screen.

Despite much speculation, the 64 year old never shies away from difficult questions, both professional and personal, and has previously opened up about her experience of romance and dating.

Anne admitted she can find it overwhelming to meet a partner and get intimate, explaining that her Asperger's syndrome causes her to "zone out".

In an interview with OK! magazine, Anne said: "I get overwhelmed in the presence of actual people and everything shuts down. I've found that with sex, too.

"It's like I can't be fully in it. That much intimacy, I almost zone out."

The quiz master was diagnosed with autism at the age of 45, but has stated that she would rather date someone without the lifelong condition.

And as for who she falls for, Anne confessed that she usually fancies people who are unobtainable.

"What I have found is that I do fall in love but it tends to not be with people I meet in real life," she explained.

"I fall in love with historical or fictional characters. People I can put a bit of distance between."

Appearing on Loose Women last year, Anne broke down the traits she looks for in a man and explained to the hosts her ideal partner.

"It would have to be someone who was intelligent of facts and reading books," she said.

"It might not be a problem if he wasn't necessarily into quizzing as long as he understood I was into quizzing."

On the talk show, she also shut down any rumours that she is gay, revealing: "Most of my fans are older women and I think some of them are hoping that I'm a lesbian. I have to sort of let them down gently."

The former journalist has been asked multiple times about her sexuality, and responded to one fan with a story about her ex-boyfriend.

"I did use to have a Californian boyfriend whose mother was a DAR. Naturally he was pro-immigration!" she said.

The brainbox previously told the Mirror that she thinks being single is freeing and she enjoys feeling "isolated".

"It's brilliant. I really don't feel I'm missing out on relationships. I'm doing fine," she said. "I still get attracted to people, but there's no point in pursuing it."

Anne, who hosted a game show called Britain's Brightest Family, reportedly has no children of her own.

Insisting she "dodged a bullet" by not having a family, she argued that children are not only "chaotic" but also incredibly expensive.

"You don't miss what you haven't had and I just think I love the peace and quiet of my life. I would like more of it," she added.

Anne told The Sun in 2019 that her longest relationship lasted four months and left her feeling "suffocated".

"Even though he lived in Brighton I still felt suffocated in Manchester. And sex was always better in my head, I felt like I was somewhere else while it was happening," she confessed.

The Governess was linked to a mystery man called Jake Hester, and some internet sites including Google and Wikipedia even declared they were "happily married".

But Anne was quick to shut down these rumours on Twitter, saying that she'd never even heard of a man with that name.

"Not particularly. Is it still claiming I'm married to someone called Jake Hester? I've given up trying to correct it," she wrote.

Speaking on I'm A Celebrity in 2018, Anne told her campmates: "I used to go into my Wikipedia page to change things like where I was born and my hometown but I've stopped bothering now."

The 64-year-old has also admitted that she prefers men to women when it comes to friends, and claimed she has "never really related to women" as they "care about stuff she doesn't quite get".

Anne said: "I have never thought of myself as a feminist. People say why and I say: 'I don't really like women very much; that's the brutal truth'."
