If convicted of the latest charges against him, Donald Trump would likely be locked up at the notorious Rikers Island jail, a law expert has said.

A grand jury has voted to criminally charge the former president over his hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels.

He is expected to hand himself in at the New York district attorney's office on Tuesday where he will have his mugshot taken.

According to Mike Lawlor, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of New Haven, Trump won't get special treatment if his is convicted.

Mr Lawlor told the Mail: "Depending on the length of the sentence, if it is relatively short, less than a few years, he will serve it on Rikers Island in New York.

"If it's a longer sentence, it would be in one of the correctional facilities upstate. But it is worth keeping in mind that Alan Weisselberg is currently incarcerated in Rikers."

Weisselberg was the longtime chief financial officer at the Trump Organisation, but was later jailed for dodging income taxes on job perks he got from Trump's company, including a rent-free apartment and a luxury car. .

Trump would likely be forced to wear a boiler suit like other inmates, and because he gets lifetime protection from the Secret Service, would have two members of the agency sitting outside of his cell.

Mr Lawlor continued: "Trump would have protective custody and would probably have a 1-1 status which is usually reserved for suicidal prisoners.

"He would have one or two secret service details sitting outside his cell with the correctional officers."

He added: "There will be no special treatment or privilege for a former politician. He is just like everybody else, will be subject to strip searches, have a prison uniform bed which is not comfortable and if and when incarcerated, he will have to deal with it.

"I don't think they'll make an exception for him. He's the one who in front of a bunch of cops said don't be too nice to these guys when you arrest them."

Trump's former attorney, Joe Tacopina, said on Fox News that the charges had come as a shock to Trump, later telling the New York Post that his former client did "not commit any crime" and has now vowed to "vigorously fight this political prosecution in court".

Mr Tacopina said Trump is “likely” to turn himself in on Tuesday next week and said that he will not be handcuffed. “We’re working out those logistics right now,” he told NBC, adding “he's not gonna hole up in Mar-a-Lago.”

He insisted that Trump would not take a plea deal, saying: “There's no crime.”
