He recalled a moment that he suggested had inspired him to propose. He said it was whilst he was spending time with Lily and her daughters Ethel, now 11, and Marnie, now 10.

The actor told chat show host Jimmy Kimmel, now 55, that the family had been on a bicycle ride when Lily's youngest daughter expressed confusion over what to call David.

David said: "She was going like 'David! Dad! Dav ... Dad!'" He said she had been "confused" and added that his future wife's eldest daughter said: "He's not our dad".

He said whilst on the show that Marnie had subsequently asked: "What is he?" David told Jimmy that her older sibling responded: "Just... he's just some guy in our lives!"

David suggested that it inspired him to propose to Lily. He explained on the chat show: "And I was like, 'I need to marry this woman because of the emotional fallout'."

The actor teased that he has since been referred to by them as "still some guy in [their] lives" and added: "That's the favourite thing I've ever been called".
