Baby names are like Marmite and people, including those closest to you, will either love them or hate them, but ultimately it's your decision to make.

One mum may have been left rethinking her decision, however, after sharing a moniker she loves for her unborn daughter online.

The unnamed parent-to-be took to BabyCentre to reveal the 'old-fashioned' name she and her partner are considering giving their baby girl and some of the middle names they might pair it with.

However, it's fair to say people weren't too keen on her choices, with many quick to brand the name 'frumpy' and share their brutally honest takes on the matter.

Her post on the community pages read: "What are your thoughts on the name Hilda? At the moment we're considering one of the following combinations: Hilda Faye, Hilda Jean, Hilda Faye Jean.

"Both Faye and Jean are our middle names, but Hilda has no family connections, we just happen to like the name.

"Some people are saying it is too old-fashioned - what are your thoughts please? Also, open to suggestions if anyone has any. Nothing beginning with A or E please."

Dozens of people replied, with many agreeing it was outdated.

One person said: "Not to my taste. It's old-fashioned and I do generally like vintage-style names, but Hilda has a really frumpy, clunky feel to it (sorry!)

"There's much worse out there though! Other names that remind of Hilda are Clara, Matilda, Greta, Gloria, Gretchen, Irene, Maude, Wilma, Beryl, Edith, Myrtle, Enid, Edna, Mabel, Meredith, Dora, Tilda. A lot of these feel clunky to me too, but might be the sort of name you like!"

Someone else wrote: "It's a frumpy name in my opinion and would feel sorry for a teenager called Hilda.

"It was my nan's name and she hated it. I think there are much nicer old-fashioned names."

However, not everyone was opposed to the moniker, with a third commenting: "I've never really thought of Hilda but it's quite sweet! I probably wouldn’t chose it myself but I can really imagine a little toddler called Hilda. My son has a Rita in his class, which is another name I never would've considered but it’s lovely & really suits her!"

A different user added: "I know a little girl called Hilda and I'll be honest it does feel a little weird on a child, but at the same time can get it's sweet. I prefer Hilda Faye, a slightly more modern feel without Jean adding more old-fashioned vibes."
